As others have said, Corazon, Herradura, and Don Julio are all excellent, and are usually either cheaper than, or equivalently-priced with, Patron.

I've personally never liked Patron very much; it's not horrible, but in my opinion it's definitely overpriced.

Cabo Wabo is actually owned by Skyy (the vodka company), as is one of the other tequila on here (but I forget which one). They taste very similar. Cabo Wabo is good and much better than Patron, but overpriced for what it is IMHO.

So, if it's Patron or Cabo Wabo I would definitely pick Cabo. For the same price though Cazadores is the better bottle. For about the same quality but a bit cheaper Sauze Hornitos anejo is a good choice (along with El Jimador and some of the others that have been mentioned).

Don Julio is under $30 in our Orange County, California stores. $40 in Baltimore and Las Vegas. $42.99-$50 everywhere else.

Best bang for the buck while not going cheap is Sauza Hornitos. Cazadores as other people said is better but it'll cost ya 5-10 more for a 750. Cabo Wabo is great but really too expensive and definitely isn't a good bang for the buck Tequila.

I had 2 drinks of Dos Lunas Grand Reserve out in Vegas two years ago (when expense accounts were Kosher)

Couldn't tell a gigantic difference between that or any other anejo tequila.

Anything that says anejo and actually means it is good enough for my tastes. That is the main thing to check for. Anejo or Blanco if you are mixing.

which Cazadores is equivalentr to patron silver?

089099 Cazadores Anejo 750ml 80proof $46.95
089100 Cazadores Anejo 750ml 80 $44.95
087306 Cazadores Blanco 750ml 80 $30.90 (THIS?)
089121 Cazadores Reposado 750ml 80 $38.95

edit:
hm... 1800 Silver Tequila 750ml 80 $29.95

what do you think about 1800 tequila?

Sorry man, I just now saw this response. Blanco is going to be the same as the Silver, but obviously cheaper.

Personally, I usually drink the Reposado and use it for drinking straight. Those prices are a bit more than what I pay here though. I can get the Reposado for $33. Still, the $30 Blanco is going to be everybit as good as Patron.

I'm not a fan of 1800. Others may be able to offer you a different opinion on it. But if they are both $30, def get the Cazadores.

TJs doesn't sell spirits, at least at the one near where I live in Illinois.

Just beer and the famous 3 buck chuck and other good wines.

they have a pretty damn fine selection across SoCal

Guess that'd make sense since that's where they're from... maybe some laws in there too, who knows. I'm sure TJs has some of these, they carry decent quality stuff usually. Just not the really high end stuff.

www.bevmo.com is where all my prices came from. This is California prices. I would bookmark this website and use its ratings and knowledge to buy your next bottle.

Add in the Sunday circulars for alcohol from CVS & Rite Aid and we get lots of cheap liquor.

Our Costco's also sell Tequila and have gotten some great bargains from them.

for those in California, I will share my secret. For margaritas I buy Puerto Vallerata resposado tequila from Rite Aid for $12.99 a bottle. its 100% Agave. I then dump the Puerto Vallerata into a CaboWabo blue bottle when friends come over so they don't get snippy with me.

El Jimador routinely also goes on sale fro $17.99 a bottle - check your Sunday newspaper ads at Rite Aid & CVS. Also, Walgreens should have a full liquor section by the end of the year in 95% of its locations in CA.

I agree with this statement, if you gonna mix buy cheap.

BTW, Numenorean, have you ever tried Casa Noble Resposado/Anejo? Find that stuff excellent sipping tequila, no salt or lime needed.

Yes that is some pretty good tequila. There was a Mexican restaurant I went to once that claimed to have over 300 tequilas. Well they had a lot, unfortunately I don't remember what it was that I had there but it was $20 or so for just the glass. Very smooth, which most people don't realize tequila can be. But it certainly isn't cheap for that quality and I doubt I would buy the bottle at I think it was around $300.

Casa runs about $45 for Blanco, $65 for Rep and $75 for Anejo at the local liquor shop (all 750ml).

I love Casa Noble, but the last bottle I bought was $89. I had to get My Guy to order it, but it was worth it. Hopefully it's cheaper now.

wow some of the misinformation in this thread is nuts. whoever said gold tequila is made gold via food coloring may be correct about the cheaper stuff but I know El Jimador and Herradura gold versions get their color from aging in oak barrels.

El Jimador is the most popular tequila in Mexico if that tells you anything, and it is right at the edge of "almost too good to mix" but makes one hell of a paloma

Herradura is quite honestly the best tequila I have ever had. I'm more of a bourbon/whiskey guy but Herradura is the only tequila I actually enjoy pouring over ice and drinking straight. It is also the only distilled spirit in the world that does not manually add yeast in the fermentation process, they actually have trees and plants nearby that attract bats, bees, and birds and they allow the natural yeast to do the fermentation for them

Can't beat $20 bottles of Don Julio Reposado. Too bad we could only bring 4 bottles back with us. I love that tequila. Can drink it all night and never feel bad the next morning.

What do you mean about cheaper? Blanco is silver. Or were you referring to specific brands?

Some nice information in this thread. I just have a question though -- if I think 1800 Respado is awful tasting, am I likely to enjoy a more expensive bottle much more? Is it a night and day difference?

I've never liked 1800. Try some Don Julio Repo. I find it to be very good. Not nearly as harsh as 1800.
