is it true that if you don't reside in the state (AKA: your car has a license plate from a different state) that you don't have to pay for the ticket?

you dont have to pay for any ticket. just so happens if you get pulled over in that state again, there might be a warrant out for your arrest for:
a) not showing up to court
b) not paying

edit: might be wrong, but you should look into it.

True. The cop had nothing better to do than give you a ticket, to see if you were dumb enough to pay it.

warrant for arrest??
isn't that kinda harsh?!

i would think that they would just make you pay both & a fee of some sort~

Of course... a license plate from another state means your immune to all traffic and parking laws. And if any of the cops or meter maids try to tell you otherwise, tell them to go suck on a donut or two, that always puts them in their place.

i believe missing a court date gets you a warrant. again, not sure. check your local listings.

It's called "failure to appear"... the ticket had a court date and you didn't go, so there's a standing bench warrant for your arrest.

This is usually the case, yeah. If you miss a traffic court date, they'll issue a bench warrant for your arrest. From what I know, bench warrants aren't actively enforced (i.e. they won't scourge the country looking for you), but if you show up in the state again, there's a chance you'll be taken in.

what if the ticket doesn't say anything about a court date.

they have your information, it goes into the criminal database for you not paying your ticket. warrent goes out over certain amount of time. have a nice day

Then it said something about when payment was due and the warrant will be issued for Failure to Pay.

Far as I understand it, you have to pay it. If you pay it, then it usually doesn't go on your state's driving record for you.
If you don't pay it then all the bad stuff happens...

So if I get a ticket for say speeding in Mass. I pay it, I'm out the money but nothing gets back to my state.
I fail to pay it, it gets back to my state and I'm paying fines and probably getting points on my license.

How are they going to make you pay since you've already shown that you're willing to skip out on what you owe? What, just issue another ticket when the first one didn't take?

You run from a ticket they'll haul your criminal ass in until they get the money. At that point that's the only way they can be sure that you'll pay.

You live in NJ like me, so if you are talking about NY, then your friend is right. I have 3 tickets from NY that I never paid, and never will, because they can't touch me here, and I rarely go into the city now.

Of course if they do get me I'm screwed, but I'm willing to take that chance.:p

Yes, you're right. The local cops are going to come to your house and transport you across state lines for your failure to pay a $20 parking ticket.

What about notification to your DMV?

Unable to renew plate?

Want to take that chance?
