Not disagreeing with whether that is the correct procedure but I've never used the parking brake in any of the automatic transmission cars I have owned (with the exception of a Subaru that had one in the center console) and I have never had a repair cost for any transmission damage to the parking pawl or transmission damage caused by non-use of the parking brake or not going through that elaborate procedure when parking my car.
Agreed, and I've also never heard of anyone having transmission damage to the pawl. If you're keeping a car for life, it doesn't hurt but I'm not going to do an extra shift to neutral, that's absurd.

just because i recently thought of this while reading this thread
my old Volvo 240 Wagon would often be left in gear (Drive) it was an automatic with the Ebrake on while parked, gotta love being able to turn off and remove the key with the car still in drive

Only when parked on a slope ... using it all the time just make it more likely you'll have brake problems sooner & also stretchs the cable requiring adjustment.

That is complete bullshit and adjusting the parking brake is very simple, it takes all of about 5 minutes to do.

If you bothered to read the thread you would see that I already said exactly this.

I use it every time I park when I drive my manual car. I never use it in my truck that is an auto. I'd probably use it on hills, but I don't live around a lot of those.

Anytime I park. Once even though the brake was on, apparently the cable was loose and my car rolled down a slight incline and hit a VW bus parked at the edge of the cliff overlooking the water. I had to pay the guy to replace the bumper on his VW.

Only when I'm on a hill. When I first started driving it was a habit of mine to always use the parking brake... But the rest of my family would not notice the brake was on and drive while the parking brake was on. Then somehow it would revert back to me... and so I stopped.

Open door and exit vehicle.
If time is money, I'd hate to see how much $$$ you've lost with this ritual.

So THAT'S why my mortgage is still not paid off. Fuck.

Shut up.

i have a manual transmission so i leave it in neutral with the parking brake on every time i park. i hate that most mechanics will leave it in first without the brake on.

I drive an automatic in which if I'm parking on what I deem a steep enough grade, I will use my parking brake in which I use this process:

1) Come to a stop in the position I want to be in (properly placed in the parking spot).
2) Put the car into neutral
3) Apply the parking brake
4) Let off the "regular" brake (the car is now resting on the parking brake)
5) Put the car into park.
6) ...
7) Profit!

For a manual, I use it every time I park.

Yes, I always use it in my car. (07 Civic)

I also use it most of the time in our 07 Chrysler T&C minivan, but it actually hurts to do so. It's a foot pedal setup, with the disengage lever right above. For some reason, they thought it would be cool to have the lever to disengage so close to the pedal that it slaps you in the knuckles. I don't know whether to be mad or to laugh.

Place your foot on the lever, then pull and hold the release. Pull your foot back slowly.

Anytime I feel like sitting in neutral, or if my car is in "park". No exceptions. I plan on keeping my go-kart for as long as possible, and don't really want to put unnecessary strain on any part if I don't have to.

Depends on the car. My Jeep is an auto, and I never use the parking brake. My Corolla is a standard and I use it all the time. My last standard did not have a parking brake, so I got in the habit of putting it in gear when parking. That developed a good habit of making sure the car was in neutral after starting it, before releasing the clutch.
