parents on ATOT, who do you love more? spouse or kids?

Not married or a parent, but I'm pretty sure I'd love my kids more.

Married with 2 kids. I love them both; it's hard to explain, but differently. That being said, there is nothing that makes my heart melt more than my daughters:heart:

You have no answer for me on your poll. I love all of them, my wife and two kids, more than anyone would ever know and would give my life in a second for any of them.

why?
i'm not married or a parent either but i think i'd love my spouse more.

Say that when looking at a beautiful baby girl or watching in amazement as they grow up. There's nothing like the innocent love of a child.

I'd think the biological desire to see your genes propagate would trump your fondness for your partner.

Dunno. I'm basing my assumption on how I feel about my brother and sister, who are young enough that I might have had children the same age if I'd started in my late teens. They just completely eclipsed everything else. I imagine children of my own would be the same but even stronger.

fictitious scenario:
your home is on fire. everyone is trapped in the same room and unconscious except you. you can only save ONE. (assume you broke your arm and it's in a sling and you can't move it. house will collapse after you make it out with one).
who is it gonna be?

That's not really the best scenario. The pragmatic approach would be to save the child, regardless of feelings. They have more life ahead of them, so there's more to be gained by saving them.

so you're making the choice logically instead of emotionally. that works for some but not everyone.

I'm just saying your setup isn't the best. My daughter comes first regardless, but with your particular situation, arguments can be made that don't take personal feelings into account.

fine. what's a better scenario then?

I think it's kids.

It's a natural survival instinct to care for your offspring. I think we're hardwired to love our kids more when it comes to truly picking one over the other. Why do you think all the divorcees fight for their kids?

But if you save your spouse, you can later have two kids with more life ahead of them.

aren't there animals who will sacrifice themselves for their children?

I thought I remembered studying that in college bio... genetic altruism or something.

For some reason, it doesn't really matter why, you have to give up the spouse, or the child. This is forever, and you only get to pick once.

I pick the child.

you're not really sacrificing yourself in this scenario because if you do, everyone dies.
