MERCER, Pa. — A man's handgun went off while he was holding it as he got into his truck in the parking lot of a western Pennsylvania gun store Saturday and the shot killed his 7-year-old son, authorities said.

Joseph V. Loughrey, 44, was getting into the truck when the 9 mm handgun discharged, wounding Craig Allen Loughrey in the chest, according to state police. The boy died at the scene at Twigs Reloading Den in East Lackawannock Township, 60 miles north of Pittsburgh. Store owner Leonard Mohney said the boy was shot in the parking lot, but that he didn't see what happened.

Investigators said Loughrey told them he didn't realize there was a bullet still in the chamber. "This happens all too often where people think the gun was empty," Lt. Eric Hermick told The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Joseph Loughrey was questioned by state police, who said he was cooperative and distraught. The shooting is being investigated as an accident.

Messages left for the coroner's office and at a listing in Loughrey's name were not immediately returned.

RIP, kid.

1: Check the chamber
2: Don't carry with a round in there
3: Don't EVER grab the trigger
4: Where the !@#$ was the safety?

No excuse for that to ever happen.

Yes, clearly the man who can't tell the difference between a real news story and an onion story should be commenting on this.

You... you would be the top 10 dumb people to accidentally kill someone with a gun.

It hasn't happened yet. It wasn't an Onion story you stupid fuck, if you can't tell the difference between an Onion story and a The Duffel Blog story you shouldn't be posting here.

Isn't that a little like saying my car crashed while I was driving it? My computer went to a porn website while I was using it?

Lots of 9mm's don't have a safety.

But I agree, there's no excuse for neglecting basic handling procedures.

1: Brass check, good idea to make sure it is loaded.
2: Not much use then, you may not have time to make ready. If you need it you need it, no time to mess around.
3: Correct.
4: No need for the type of safety I believe you are looking for here.
A proper holster prevents any of this from happening. Very sad.

Gun stopped what it was pointed at when the trigger was pulled.

Sounds like it worked perfectly.

Very sad about the child. By any reasonable definition, Dad is guilty of negligent homicide.

I'm not sure sending him to Jail would teach him anything or make him feel worse though. Maybe send him to talk at schools like the DUI folks do.
