Paramedic’s Angry Post About "Burger Flippers" Making $15/hr Goes Viral

we will see how fast prices rise on items they need and if others who make the same feel the same.

today I saw a job posted locally for $16/hour as an assistant and my first thought was why bother when you can work fast food for $15/hour and you prob get a free meal while working.

So these $15/hr fast food workers will begin to lose government benefits as they earn more.... That is until they are replaced by machines.

As for the paramedic he should have known he could not live on $15/hr in New York City. He should have worked somewhere else or chose a different field. A lack of EMT's would drive up salaries. The average salary for paramedics near me is $30,000 entry level and more for private companies.... And the cost of living is much less than New York.

If $15/hr is all that separates Workers from Machines, then fuck it. Capitalism is done with.

Look on the bright side. Seems to me you'd have a much better chance at getting promoted into a higher paying position as an assistant than as a minimum wage fast food server. 😉

Everybody needs to start somewhere. Let's not kid ourselves, luck has a lot to do with it; e.g. being born into wealth, etc. but planning where to enter the job market to get to where you want to end up is crucial.

Getting a decent minimum wage is a huge boost toward staying employed while holding out long enough for finding better/bigger opportunities, instead of waiting around for the big break while collecting unemployment benefits. 🙂

Their work consists of putting a cup under a soda faucet, putting meat on two pieces of bread and squirting condiments on the bread, and dropping French fries into oil.

The UAW complains that VW workers in Chattanooga start at $14/hour. The truth is if they were paid more VW could not sell the Passat at the price point they needed and the company wold have built the plant in Mexico.

Fast foods business model is to sell a meal for $4-$7 (adjust for your locality). If a company cannot attract consumers with a cheap meal they will go out of business.

Aren't we sort'a talking apples/oranges here in the sense that the cost of living in NY is much higher than in TN?

If only VW had some other avenue to pay their employees more before raising product prices...

Volkswagen said that net profit for the group rose to 2.9 billion euros, or about $3.2 billion, in the first three months of 2015, from €2.5 billion a year earlier. Sales rose 10 percent to €52.7 billion.

While Paramedics are very underpaid, I am surprised how low one in NYC is getting paid. NYC usually has above average wages since the cost of living is so high, making the wages actually kind of crappy.

Capitalism is alive and well in Asia actually, since it sort of requires the accumulation of capital. The only thing the U.S. has been accumulating since the 90s is cheap labor and long term liabilities while shedding capital.

Why does he care so much?

Because he's another stupid American that doesn't realize his own worth and gets mad when others have that epiphany and realize they are worth more.

If he wasn't so stupid, instead of complaining about other people getting more he should be complaining about his own crappy pay and demanding more.

Sadly he's not alone and most Americans have been brainwashed by this type of thinking.

If I were to frequent a food business and most of the items drastically went up I would stop frequenting the store. IMO, this is what will happen because most people are on tight budgets.

The reality is many many Americans today are college educated, but they are unskilled. They are unskilled in the subjects that matter today: math, science and technology. This in-turn has created a gluttony of both college and high school unskilled workers who are all vying for the same low paying jobs. The reason why we are seeing such a stink about minimum wage is because many of the adults working these jobs are college educated people. These are bright people, but they are unskilled.

During my time in South Korea I've worked with many students. The one thing that struck me was how highly skilled they were in math, science and technology. This is why they are ready for the 21st century while many young Americans who are graduating today are going to be left behind.

Same argument I've heard about union workers getting paid more than their privately employed counter-parts. Instead of enviously criticizing the unionized workers, the soreheads needed to man up and demand they get the same or try to get hired at the union shop. This starts the ball rolling toward raising everyone's pay, of which unions did exactly that after WWII, of which as a matter of fact gave rise to the middle class as the economic engine on which the nation prospered from at that time.

$15/hr is around $30k per year.

...you know that right?

Ohhhhhh we're not supposed to spend more than we even have. Ohhhhhhhh I just had an epiphany.

Thanks I needed that advice actually. Minus the minimum wage crap. I don't really care either way. Putting it at the peak adjusted for inflation seems like the fairest place. $10-11 or so. $15 is a tad too high. Its the minimum afterall, you'd expect someone to move up from there.

Sorta, there's a segment of educated people in the US that have been doing just fine. Household income of B.S. and above holder is >$100K

If their work could be easily replaced by machines, it would have already been done. Margins are extremely competitive in FF.

I don't know why so many assume machines can just replace everyone one. Machines are good for predictable, repetitive tasks, not dynamic work environments.
