Not punk, an neither are any of those bands.

The record industry can slap whatever label they want on their crappy music, it doesn't make it true.

I'd like to know how you think this pop crap is even a 10th as good as NoFX or Rise Against.

By the way, they don't touch up their albums, either, and they still sound 1000x better. Not to mention they sound original and meaningful every time, instead of having 1 good track and 12 crappy ones per CD.

Lastly, they make their own money, and don't feed the recording industry greed machine.

Alright, fine. I'm an asshole sometimes. Sorry.

CD is meh... One For The Kids and Underdog EP were good (if you like Yellowcard, buy those albums); everything afterwards is the usual uninspired corporate drivel

not to take away from you liking the album, of course you have your own taste and opinion - so do I 🙂

Ummm Rise Against is 100% pop-punk as is No-FX. They are signed to a major lable now, reviewed (postively glowing mind you) in everything from Rollingstone to Entertainment weekly. Sorry they crossed the like to pop too.

Who did, Rise Against???

WTF?! (Obviously I don't keep up on this sort of news often)

NoFX is about as hard and real as it gets, today, IMO. How can you say that they're pop, explain this to me, please.

Edit: Wow, I was wondering why some of Rises songs have been sounding monotonous and boring lately.

For anyone into punk, I'd suggest

Bad Religion - New Maps of Hell

as a new album to buy. Nothing extraordinary but very good. Hopefully it isn't explicit (don't think so) as I must buy from Walmart. 😱

I gave that album a listen this weekend. Its not bad, but not their best either. Though, you have to respect that they can still rock after all these years.

Let me first say that I am a big bad religion/nofx/rise against fan...however
they are ALL on the far POP side of punk...the music is melodic and upbeat, and generally more poppy than other types of punk.
Nofx is far from "hard" punk as you had said earlier. Their music is produced w/ fat mikes label, but they put a lot of $$$ in to the recording process - it's remixed/perfected etc and far from the gritty street punk music or the like.
Again, not bashing the music at all, but it is in no way hard punk.

As for the original topic of the thread...=) I'm not a big yellow card fan but I'll pass the word along to my brother who at least used to really like them.

I only said it was harder.

If we're going to flex our punk muscles, I absolutely love Minor Threat, Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, and sometimes some Husker Du if I'm feeling like something softer. 😛

Realistically, I'm not really a punk expert, I instead grew up with rave and electronic music. I've still been to my fair share of punk shows, though. I'm just an enthusiast.

It sure is ... if you like emo.

I saw yellowcard in Asbury Park, NJ two years before they were big when they first released Ocean Avenue. They sucked then and they suck now. Whiny music like they make is barely rock and is better fit for angsty preteen girls.

EDIT: misstype

Just briefly it might be worthwhile to remind everyone that one of the great qualities of art and music is that beauty is, in many ways, in the eye of the beholder--it is subjective.

Thanks for the input from those of you that don't like Yellowcard, but I don't doubt for a second that many (even some that are not "angsty preteen girls") will exercise their due rights to disagree with you.

Every kind of music has its stereotypes, but only a stereotype stereotypes others because of their personal tastes.

Lights and Sounds was their best album, personally. It was more hardcore and cut-throat. This 3rd full album, it's got great songs, but I don't think it lives up to the 2nd one quite as well.

The 1st and 2nd albums are qutie different in style, I agree, but I would have to say again, Lights and Sounds was their best thus far.

One of my fav. bands. Oh yeah, good songs I like from Paper Walls are Afraid, Fighting and Five Becomes Four.

Good luck, all^

But anyway I think Yellowcard is decent and has a pretty good drummer. I heard their one single on the radio and I liked it a lot, I'll probably be picking up this CD soon.

Sorry, their drummer sucks. I had the misfortune of hearing them on Warped Tour one year. The guy has zero feel, can't play in the pocket to save his life, and his beats are completely stock. Actually, that accurately describes all members in the band.

Drums are probably the single easiest thing to doctor in the studio, starting by not actually letting the drummer play anything on the album and instead using a studio drummer with a gag order in his contract. After that, they can individually edit each drum hit to fix it, as well as completely replace the sound of the drum with any other sound they choose. They can even sequence drum beats using samples of his drum kit if they want. They can massively compress the dynamic range to hide inconsistencies. Between those techniques and Auto-Tune and VocAlign to fix their vocals, this is a band that could never have existed 10 years ago but now can enjoy a successful MTV career thanks to the wonders of the computer.

Actually, the same could be said for every band in the OP's list. I really like Jimmy Eat World, but one need only go back to their old work to see what a massive difference studio production makes in a band's mainstream appeal. Their current singer was only allowed to sing backup because his vocals were so strident and off-key. Auto-Tune made it possible for him to be the lead singer and take the band into the mainstream.

It's to say, it's "who" you know, not "what" you know, entirely.

...that's why you don't watch live performances, duh.
