I've been wanting to get a smart phone for awhile. I even canceled my serve with verizon to wait to see what happened this year. One of the definite phones ive been looking at is the pre. Ive read just about every review and looked at a bunch of videos and overall i can say i'm pressed. I guess no phone is ever perfect and there are some things i'm disappointed with:

1) Build Quality-This is a major complaint and i would think they would have made its build quality similar to the blackberry storm or the iphone or G1. No such luck on that end

2) Screen Size -- the screen seems really nice just wish it was a LITTLE bigger. I think every web page your going to have to zoom into to see anything.

3) Limited Apps & Failure to release SDK/APIs to general community - Ok the limited apps i understand since it hasn't even been released and palm has itself in a chicken/egg situation here. Hoopefully it ends up working out for them. I do think they should have released an SDK a LONG time ago to the general public. That is the problem is because we don't know how good the APIs are to build quality apps. They said its going to be based around HTML/CSS/Ect....but thats not good enough. They could still suck. And one of my concerns is it going to be to slow to build really good quality apps compared to Object-C. There are so many useful apps on the iphone its the only thing that kind of pulls me a little towards the iphone

4) No yahoo messenger - i use this app all the freakn time and really bumbed its not available yet for the pre. I sure hope it comes.

The main thing that is pushing me towards the pre is multitasking. From the videos it looks awesome. If i'm in a chat app there is no way i want to leave that open. I just want to get notification when i receive IMs....this is a major downfall of the iphone

From my reasearch sprints network seems to be pretty good around my area and the service plans for sprint can't be beat. They don't try to nickel and dime you to death like at&t/verizon does (text messages). I refuse to pay $20 for unlimited text messages. Sprint has a plan that includes unlimited everything for $99 which is just awesome. The same plan on at&t is $150 and i think around $155 on verizon. I really like verizons network but i'm unwilling to spend the difference.

I'm a little disappointed in two prospects:
Android Phones - I'd really like android phone to be an option but there is no way in hell i'm going with Tmobile. You can't even get 3G coverage in my area and sprint is cheaper. They have anounced a bunch of new android devices this year but they are failing to announce specific dates/networks that the phones will be on. Its to bad.

Microsoft - I sometimes think microsoft just doesn't get it and will someday turn into IBM. What are they waiting for?!?!?!? They have a perfect product to make a touchscreen like phone (the zune) and could make an awesome zune like phone but the refuse to do this. I guess in about 2 years they will release something and then apple/others will have a 5 year jump on them and then they won't be able to catch up. Pretty similar to the IPod situation or search with google. Microsoft tries to catch up to late. Id really love a zune phone because i'm sure its programming environment would be based upon the .Net Framework (my forte). I just look how much potential revenue microsoft is missing out on. Why do you think apple is doing so good in this down economy. It really sucks about the zune to. I have two zunes (one flashed based and one hard drive based) and they are really great devices but i don't think they will ever catch up with the ipod....even the zune HD.

Anyways i plan to go to best buy tomorrow and see if they have one. If they don't thats ok. I'm not camping out or doing anything crazy like that.

Not going to VZW in 6 months.

Edit: Unless Sprint sells a million in that timeframe.

I have Sprint and it's IMO the best provider *IF* you have service in your area/travel to areas with service. Also, Sprint's everything plan includes free voice roaming (if you need to use data you'll have to pay) so you get to use VZWs towers...

If I can get a Pre without changing my plan (doesn't look good right now) I certainly will...

If you have the everything plan you have to pay for data sometimes in the US? I thought that was included?

If I can get it with SERO, I might. I don't really like my Centro too well...it's slow and locks up every once in a while.

The resolution is the same on the pre as the Iphone so no need to zoom.

Good question, because my plan has everything that Simply Everything has minus roaming (for a lot cheaper)... they might've taken that off too..

Just an FYI, if you jailbreak your iPhone, you can run it on other carriers (I know T-Mobile for sure, not sure about Sprint or Verizon.) Once jailbroken, you can run an app called "Backgrounder" which will allow you to run applications in the background. I use it for Pandora Internet Radio, so that I can use the browser while music is playing. You may be able to use messengers in the same way, I'm not sure if you will get notifications how you want them though.

I like the features and everything that has been discussed and showcased with the Pre, but I need to see one in person before I decide on purchasing one. It looks small. I have a Treo700P now and am comfortable with the size. My wife has a Centro and it is a little too small for me.

Tmoblile runs on GSM just like AT&T, which is why a Jailbroken iPhone will work with it. Sprint and Verizon run on CDMA, so no iPhone for them...

looks like it'll sell as long as its plan remains cheaper than the iphones. but theres no way they can get by without a discount.

It's only on Sprint, so no. Until Sprint can improve their customer service, no way will I be giving them my business. The fact that they've lost 1 million+ customers for the last 7 quarters, tells me they have a long way to go. I'll stick with my 3G iPhone for now.

I hate my Verizon phone but I like their service. Will wait until they get it. Of course, if I find out they gimped it or forced their fucking UI on the thing then I will be more pissed off than that time I purchased Supreme Commander.
My plan isnt up until Oct. so thats good incentive for them to woo me back. Or I could just go back to Tracfone and carry around a netbook in a backpack, an option looking more attractive to me every month.
