What is the general political affiliation/points of view of the economist considered?

It is a highly progressive and business-oriented magazine. Their articles are top-notch in every sense of the word and their surveys are must reads for the subject they're covering. In fact, the Economist is so good that I actually look for mistakes in their predictions and assessments after the fact. Strangely, their articles do not name the author. This must be a cultural thing because I remember the Financial Times didn't either until a couple of years ago.

If you want a magazine that deals with the political economy, finance, science, technology, and the arts, you won't find a better weekly magazine.

To paraphrase their slogan, they are advocates of the "extreme center".

So you blooming idiots really believe Palin doesn't read newspapers? And doesn't know of any court cases she disagrees about when she wrote a dissenting editorial letter criticizing the Supreme Court's slowness in handling the Exonn case earlier this year?

Uh, do you have a link to the letter? Were you there when she wrote it? I suppose you think Bush writes all the White House statements too? Thankfully, no.

Anyone who continues to say nuke-u-lur isn't writing her own letters to the editor, IMHO.

You don't have a copy of her college English grades do you? I'd also love to see her Senior Thesis, assuming the University of North Dakota, Hoople Extension, Night Divison required them. Oh, erm, darn, that's right, she was wait listed....

-Robert

You don't have Obama's Harvard grades, either... do you? Makes you wonder why he's not released them.... hmm?

Releasing all those "A"s would make him look elitist and it would be perceived as idle bragging. But, you don't get elected President of the Harvard Law Review because you are a black Muslim commie symp cocaine using lump of Gentleman's "C"s. I went to law school. Law review is for the creme of the crop...always.

So, don't you feel really stupid making that comparison? 🙂

-Robert

"Law review is for the creme of the crop...always."
What he said.

It boggles the mind that anyone would compare one who made to President Harvard Law review with someone who went to 5 or 6 colleges (including community college) to complete under graduate school.

By the way, it's not unusual in America for people to not read the newspaper, magazines, or even follow current events online. I'd say fully half of my family members take zero interest in current events. It's sad, but it's also very true. On the other hand, no one in my family is running for office.

It's safe to say that if Newt Gingrich had been answering questions instead of Palin, the answers would have been lucid, factually correct, but with the wrong conclusion. 😉

Has anyone considered that she didn't want to politically endorse a specific newspaper? Or maybe she uses *gasp* the internet and actually can at least get the headlines off all of the major newpapers?

Sheesh.

Then she should have said as much. It would have been very easy for her to do, although that's an awful snub to her hometown newspapers while she's talking about how "Alaska is a microcosm of America" blah blah.

I don't think anyone actually believes that Palin doesn't read any newspapers or magazines. What people are doing is questioning her honesty and judgment based upon her own answers. Of all the questions to be so painfully evasive on...

She's f'n useless and any chance there ever was for me to switch my vote to McCain was thrown away after I watched the Couric interviews and the VP debate...

Obama '08. It's done. Finished. McCain is history.

I don't interpret "didn't blink" as "immediately accepted without question". Just means she knew instantly that she wanted to accept. Then again, almost everything political is a matter of interpretation.
A slight expansion of the quotation. My interpretation is that she wanted to emphasize the immediacy of her answer.

GIBSON: And you didn't say to yourself, "Am I experienced enough? Am I ready? Do I know enough about international affairs? Do I -- will I feel comfortable enough on the national stage to do this?"
PALIN: I didn't hesitate, no.
GIBSON: Didn't that take some hubris?
PALIN: I -- I answered him yes because I have the confidence in that readiness and knowing that you can't blink, you have to be wired in a way of being so committed to the mission, the mission that we're on, reform of this country and victory in the war, you can't blink. So I didn't blink then even when asked to run as his running mate.

100%. We need to get rid of all the idiots.

Since an idiot is a relative term, there would only be one person standing. Who would it be?

my guess is she doesn't read any magazines or newspapers on a regular basis, her being a wife, soccer mom, special needs mom, governing a state, and now running for VP. 😛

Of course, they have told multiple, coflicting stories about her acceptance (I think it's at least three).

In another, she said that she pulled her daughters together (she said her son was not consulted since he woudn't be too affected because he was going to Iraq), and asked them wehther she should accept. It's another nice family folksy tale for when it's useful, to complement the 'immediately said yes no blink' story that is handy for when she wants to look strong and determined.

The willingness to tell lies is the more important behavior, though.

That actually makes sense. Not eloquent, but it makes sense.

We differ. It's a lot of blathering hot air aimed at the rednecks who worship the Bush 'it may be the wrong decision but it was made instantly and is not gonna change' style.

Like I said, it's all up to interpretation.
