OK I got a pair of these CPUs and they do OC past the 2.6Gig mark. One CPU will do 3.2Gigs but the other one only post at 3.0 gigs but to get them stable and to lower the voltages I got them running at 2.6Gigs @ 200x13. You can find the PC-DL mobo for only $180 at mwave. So for a killer budget SMP system this rocks

Thats a nice OC, I didnt know xeons were multiplier unlocked. Might I ask what PS you are using?

Just bought a set. Can't beat the price. They are going for more than that on Ebay. I know Windows XP Pro supports 2 processors. Will it work with these since they are HT and will show up as 4 ?

Thanks.

One more question.. Will P4 fan/heatsinks work on this? Or do I need a Xeon specific set?

It should show up as 4 without problems.

And you do need xeon heatsinks,

You're better off getting a pair of windtunnels off of ebay as they can be had for between 10-15 each plus shipping.

Or if you want to spend a bit more get a pair of the new cooler master heatpipe ones :)

The maximum multiplier is locked. On this particular cpu, the default (and max) multiplier is 16. However, you can lower the multiplier (if your motherboard supports it). For these cpus, on the Asus PC-DL motherboard, I think the minimum multiplier is 12. This would allow you to shoot for a 12 * 200 (2400 mhz) overclock. Be aware that for a very small fraction of time, when first starting up, the cpu must be able to run at the default multiplier times the FSB. So if attempting 200 times 12, momentarily the cpu must run at 200 times 16 (the default multiplier) until the BIOS can turn it back down to 200 times 12.

$9 each. Shipping to Texas for two was $7, total $25 shipped for a pair. And there is a 10% off code floating around.

I don't know how good these are for overclocking, but they are the least expensive Xeon heatsinks I have seen.

Good price for decent and cheap Xeon HS's., but be careful as these do not work on the Asus PC-DL due to capacitor placement around the CPU sockets (at least they didn't on mine). They work fine with the Tyan AN2668 which is not a good OC mobo for these CPU's. FYI.

;)

I can just imagine the setup I could build with the motherboard and these 2 xeons. I can only dream though since school has broken the bank....:(

Is this combo really as kickass as you peeps make it out to be? I've been wanting to jump on a dual setup for awhile now and if this is really all it's cracked up to be...well...that's all she wrote.

I just picked up a pair. :) I REALLY, really, really (can you tell I really wanted it?) a dual Opteron rig, but after all was said and done, I'd be looking at $2K.

Most folks are getting these Xeons considerably above 2GHz; can you beat DUAL 2.0GHz+ Xeons for $120? Not likely.

Now the problem seems to be finding a motherboard. These Xeons are Socket 604, which is what all the new Xeons are. This is good. However, these Xeons are also 100FSB models, which is what all the OLD Socket 603 Xeons are.

Some of the new kickass OCing Xeon motherboards (I.E. Iwill DH800) don't work with these 100FSB models EVEN THOUGH they are of the proper socketage <--word? (This is what I've read).

I know about the Asus PC-DL. It has no PCI-X slots, which is what I want. Also, Asus quality w/server boards is spotty.

Any suggestions/advice on mobos?

are these 100fsb (that would make them p3 core)? or quad pumped 100fsb? (400mhz)

Hey there. We're right next to each other, point-wise in F@H! :D

These are the quad-pumped, 400MHz versions. Linky

They would make for a KILLER crunching rig. BUT, if I'm going to do this, I may as well build my workstation/gaming rig that I've been wanting for awhile. Hence my desire for PCI-X slots.

No these are P4 Northwood/Prestonna cores. 604 pin, 100Mhz FSB (400) and 512kb of L2 cache. They should get a easy 1Ghz overclock (2.6Ghz) or faster.
Put these in a 875 Xeon board and have a great Dual cpu (4 with HT) system.

This is the NEW 875 Dual Xeon board from Asus, the NCCH-DL.

It supports the newwer 800Mhz chips and has 2 64bit slots (PCI-X)

But it does about 40% more then the PC-DL, $330

Thanks Marlin 1975; I'm drooling all over that board now. Newegg doesn't even list it yet...and who knows if they are ever going to carry it?

They are my favorite etailer by far, but they always seem to be so far behind the times! Seems to take them 2 months to carry products others had in stock 2 months ago.
