$19.99 at Best Buy . . . same as the Painkiller eXpansion pak. :)

NOW . . . .

1) Does it have 'anytime save'?

. . . . ok, i fibbed . . . . just one question . . . but it's a dealbreaker for me if it's the checkpoint crap. :p

edit: Conclusion - Great game that runs well on a mid-level system. Very entertaining and addicitive (and challenging). . . . .did i mention the "saves" load quickly?

:D

Final edit and resurrection: OK, i beat Luci (surprisingly NOT tough . . . . the Hammer Guy was the Baddest for me . . . even Alistar was pretty easy) and got the "first ending" . . . . crap . . . . now i DO want to see the "real ending" . . . . What's nest?

See my update post . . . .

Feb 6 late night Update . . . . . NO, it isn't as easy to see the true ending as i was lead to believe. :p

Feb 8 - Got the eXpansion pack BOoH - see my latest (Feb 8) post.

FEb 10 . . . . BOoH not saving beginning with "Dead City" it's tough playing w/o saves. :p
d/l'ing v.1.61 . . . anyone else have similar problems with saving?

Feb 12 OK, i applied 1.61 . . . . ALL MY SAVED GAMES WERE DELETED!!!

Now that's a "fix"
:p
:(
:|

see latest post

Feb 13 - Finished BOoH; any other secret endings? see my LAST post (unless anyone ELSE has ?s)

i understand that some (younger) players enjoy the challenge of the checkpoint savings . . . . i have been young for a long (long . . . very long) time. Although i still love especially FPSes, i no longer have the time nor patience to become proficient at every game i play (and some aren't worth the time). ;)

my last checkpoint games i actually finished were on Super Nintendo . . .

Anyway, i'm off to install it - thanks for the quick replies. . . . i only got to play the Demo with my Radeon 8500 - my 9800xt should give a lot more gfx eyecandy and speed. :)

Consider this a PSA that Painkiller is on sale . . . . . i have been waiting for BOTH PK and FC to get sub$20 . . . . :D

Any comments on the expansion pak? Is there a necessary patch?

Expansion pack's more of the same. Themed levels, new enemies, and a handful of new weapons. I liked the original better, but it's (expansion) still good. Graphic engine was upgraded some amount; my older video card worked fine on the original, but the expansion required me to ratchet down the settings a couple of notches. I picked it up from GoGamer in December when they had it on sale.

i like it - so far . . . . kill kill kill kill kill kill kill but without the 'sameness' that is Doom iii . . . more FUN - like Serious Sam series.

GFX are good and it runs fine at 10x7, everything High and On and Max and even some AA with my 9800xt

so far, so good

thanks for your replies

i set Jedi OutKast aside to play this . . . . JO is great but a bit long and the jumping and puzzles are starting to wear on me (although the Force weapons are great and the Boses - Hard) . . . . i am a sucker for better gfx. :p

What PATCH do i use? . . . . there are SEVERAL - up to 384MB(!!!)

i am guessing 1.35 (1.61 is the BIG one for the competition and i guess is mostly multiplayer)

Don't know why Painkiller is the game of choice, the multiplayer SUCKS. SP is fun though, as someone else said, in a serious sam kinda way. HUGE bosses that are very challenging too. Also, you can't really beat it unless it's hardest difficulty, which makes it a challenge for a long time.

Love the game, I'm installing it again as I type this. I downloaded the v1.61 patch, I want to see the graphical enhancements of the Havok 2.0 engine.

I need to buy/play/beat the expansion pack before I get lost in KOTOR2 next month....

LMK what you find, please.

AFAIK, the gfx enhancements are to match the expansion pak . . . . is it worth it for a SP (not multi) to get the maga patch?

i just want to PLAY . . . not wait 10 hours for a d/l (i still have 3-1/2 hours left on the remaining 3/4s of v1.35):p

Ok so aside from the pain of painkiller having only one mirror site for it's updates(and no dedicated server), the patch didn't work. Now to hunt for it somewhere else... wait, fileplanet!

I installed the game and the patch tonight and I only got to play for about 10 minutes before I had to workout and go to work. I'll give it a lengthy spin over the weekend and report back on how it looks on my system. I'll have all the effects cranked way up, too. :)

Here is an excerpt from the 1.61 patch description:

The update also includes Battle Out of Hell?s graphic enhancements, the reworked networking core and a number of fixes for outstanding issues. Utilizing the impressive Havok 2.0 physics engine, Painkiller continues to achieve new heights of physics-based game play while version 1.61 of the proprietary PAIN Engine pumps out an unbelievably high polygon count, and awesome visual effects like heat and haze distortion, per-pixel spectacular mapping, support for NVIDIA?s Shader Model 3.0.

The patch is also up on Fileshack now

All I remember about Serious Sam is back back back back back........firing all the time.....backward circles. After awhile the game and zerging just annoys me and ends up off my HD. If PK is like this I won't bite on the bargain bin price.

i remember SS better than that . . . . i really liked Serious Sam series . . . . PK is a 'bit' like that but darker (think 'Doom') . . . . . enemy after enemy rush you and the "frustration" you get is intended by the game programmers (fortunately the weapons are up to the task if your reflexes are). ;)

Damn! . . . . it took 4 hours for me to d/l the 90MB 1.35 patch (and i didn't see much gfx difference eXcept i NOW can run PK at 11x8 with no slowdowns in firefights).

So far . . . . i like PK . . . . much better than the PK demo i tried last year.

edit: for those that finished the game . . . . how important is it to unlock every level and get the black tarot cards? essential? shall i go back and break and get everything?

When eb was clearing out their pc games, PK was about $2. Opened & sealed copies were there. I had too many games in my hand by then, so i forgot about it. The remaining copies, are like $20 again. :(

Filefront is my favorite file place now. Don't need to register an account, never any wait, and very popular. Hopefully their patch works where the other one didn't...
