Yesterday I was yawning, and when I was opening my mouth I felt a pop on the right side of my jaw. Since then i've been getting this pain there. It hurts too much to bite down, and hurts if I try open my mouth wide. I can still opening my mouth and talk, just not really bite, or open wide. When I woke up this morning, it def felt alot worse. Any ideas?

The pop isn't uncommon, perhaps from fluid in the joint, similar to popping ones knuckles, caused by overextension, . You may have a pulled muscle or a ligament strain, same injuries that affect other joints etc.

I'm not a doctor, but I did rob someone staying in a holiday inn last night. :);)

Usually they can treat TMJ by having you wear a small appliance for a while . . .
like a dishwasher or a dryer, sometimes a refrigerator will work.

(actually a 'brace' to help with alignment)

Crap, I think I have it too, I've been getting unusual jaw soreness lately (and before that it always popped, though without pain)

Me too. Sometimes it seems like it gets really painful if there is a dramatic change in the weather (kind of how old people describe arthritis)

everyone has 2 TMJs. TMJ - is temperomandibular joint, which is the joint which allows you to open and close your mouth.

sounds like you have TMD = temperomandibular joint Disorder. the "pop" sound you heard was your TMJ going out of socket. it went back in by itself, but that is still gonna cause some inflammation which is why it is sore.

the dentist is going to tell you to be careful yawning, opening your mouth wide to eat, don't chew gum and the like. there is really nothing you can do to prevent it from happening again but be careful not to stress out the joint or don't open your mouth widely.

and you can take tylenol for the pain.

there, saved ya a dental visit. ;)

Mine pops all the time, but there is no pain.
Is that a bad thing?
(Not all the time, but fairly frequently)

<- Not a dentist

Its a semi-permanent problem as far as I know. It affected me ~10 years ago for a couple of years. Then it went away on its own and periodically returns for a week or so.

I remember back in the 80s there was a huge deal about this all over the news for quite some time. People spent lots of money, had tons of work done in attempt to fix it, milked insurance companies for all they could, and in the end there really was no improvement in the popping/pain. Don't know if there have been any advances since.

i think that for the majority of people it will go away in due time. earlier this year i had it bad for about 4 months. just try to eat soft foods, don't yawn, don't lean on your chin, and try taking some anti-inflammatories. my tmd has improved a lot, i get a little tightness every now and then but no more awful pain.

I would go to a dentist or oral surgeon ASAP & get an X-Ray to be %100 sure there was no bone involvement.

I had this too and my dentist made me wear a night guard so I wouldn't clench my teeth during sleep. Turned out I think I was just chewing too much gum, either overstressing or overdeveloping the jaw muscles.

DO YOU CHEW LOTS OF GUM? Stop and it should go away.

i dont chew gum but i think these are some of the reasons why: i have an overbite, and when i was a little kid i used to gnaw my teeth when i slept. i dont anymore, but i think i clench my teeth now, no idea why. I heard it can also be contributed by stress - end of semester projects, and finals can do that for u in college :/
