Crush? How do 620 points from 3dmark no less equal a crush? Anyway, I'll post it again as it might have gotten lost in the posts:

I thought I would just throw this into the mix. It's fun to compare benchmarks and all that but what it boils down to is the games. A couple of days before I got this deal I exchanged my 9800 NP for an Xbox. My thought process was basically after it was said and done spending $250 on a video card is, how should I say it, less than settling to me. It's not that I cannot afford it, it's just the principal of it. The moral of the story is some would have you believe that there is a day and night difference between the 9600PRO and the 9800NP/whatever, it's simply not true, twice the cost does not equal twice the performance. Point and case Unreal Tournament 2003 and the Halo demo. Playing U2K3 at 1600x1200 is not as silky smooth on the 9600pro as it was on the 9800 but at 1280x1024 there is really no discernable difference and quite frankly the difference in resolution is not that appreciable either. On the Halo demo the 9800 was choppy, granted not as choppy as the 9600pro but then again not enough to really tell. BTW I only mention these two because those are the ones that I could actually tell a difference on, every other game in my library played as good as the 9800.

Anyway I looked at it like this: $250 buys me a great video card with longer legs. For $60 more I still get a great video card upgrade but with an xbox too! To each his own, just thought I would share.

I can understand being frustrated at going to the effort of purchasing the card, installing it and not seeing a significant improvement but don't think anyone here said the 9600 was better than the 9500 (might want to blame ATI's marketing on this one).

you are probably right saying to blame ATI marketing, but all of the reviews and tests seem to back up the fact that a 9600 pro should whip a 9500np...I even overclocked the 9600 and it still lost

620 points don't necessarily equal a crush, but its back to the perception that a 9500 np should not be able to beat a pro version.

but you are right....to some folks this will be a great upgrade, to me it would be a step backwards.

I think 3d mark tests are good for comparing your own system when you do upgrades/modifications, etc thats about the only time I use them.

anyways......great deal for the $$$....especially with HL2

The Best Buy on Midway and 635 in Dallas had two with the 180339... S/N. Picked one up, and it was indeed a PRO, at least according to the sticker. Thanks DRS!

Is there any sort of probe I can run to make sure that it is indeed a PRO?

*EDIT* Used aida32, seems to be a PRO.

More temptation , the Best Buy in Baton Rouge has 2 180339s, and 1 180333 left as of 5:30 pm. I picked one up and it is a 9600 Pro.

Do you mind telling me the number on your ram chips. Mine are made to run at 300mhz(600ddr)

I freeze up at 500mhz and get glitches if the ram is at 330. This sucks. Maybe it's cause im using 3.8 drivers? Where are these omega's?

You may be able to hit the PAUSE key. Pause often works on bios messages.

Also, there was a link on the first page or 2 to goto ATI and type in serial and get them to tell you what it is or soemthing like that.

here is the scoop...... I have a 9500np with the "L" memory that will not softmod. it does overclock very well though (390/285). I score 12,600 3d2K1 with it.

I installed the 9600pro and ran it at defualt speeds.....scored 10,650 marks. I overclocked it to the max (515/333) and it scored 11,980

so the bottom line as far as my rig goes is that a 9500np overclocked will totally crush a 9600pro..even overclocked.

here are my specs...only thing changed was the video card
AMD XP1700@2400 (12x166)
Epox 8K3A
768mb PC2700 (2-2-5-2)
Sapphire Radeon 9500np/ ATI Radeon 9600 pro
win XP pro

did you test them on 3dmark03?

Hi Grimace,
I just did the 3d2K3 test. Using an old published run for the 9500 (giving up 80mhz and no telling what other mobo bios differences, RAM differences, etc) the 9600 does score 350 points more (3909 vs 3560). The odd thing in this test was the fillrate results were totally opposite. Whereas the 9600 dominated in 2K1, the 9500 dominated in 2K3. the rest of the results had the 9600 winning by a couple of frames up to 25 frames

I will re-install the 9500 this weekend and run it using the same setup. I expect the 9500 to pick up 100 or so points. I will also play games with it and see if they "feel" different.

I still think the 9500 has plenty of legs for upcoming games.....don't retire the old nags yet!

I would love to see anyone elses results/comments.
