WooWee!!!!!
Just opened up the box and got a liteon! There isn't even any attempt to cover up the name of the manufacturer.

Which is better for overall use (CD burning, backing up games, CDRW backups):

1) TDK 12X10X32A
2) Liteon 24X10X40

Please send me PM if you have an opinion (I don't want to extend this thread unnecessarily).

I got this drive in today and it was the Mitsumi. Pretty good so far, i must say i am pleasantly surprised. Burnt 2 audio cd's 10 minutes after i took it out of the box at 24x just fine.
Only question i am having so far is the audio ripping. I use Nero 5.5.7.2 for buring and am not even bothering with the software included in the box. But i cannot find a good cd ripping program (tried db poweramp and cd dex, 2 freeware programs i got) but they were not going at 40x, and if they did start going fast the stress on the CPU usage was unreal. But if i get that worked out this would be a sweet drive.
BTW, regarding the fear this drive does not do SD2 like the Lite-On, that is correct, but there is a fix for it. With the program clonecd, there is a sidekick program called Betablocker that over writes the errores in the SafeDisc protection scheme, so it WILL make working backups of SD2 games.

pretty hot deal in my book, now let's see how long the rebate takes.

:|:|:|! I just got the package this morning and it's a BTC! This thing suck! The max speed i can get in nero is 20x and it doesn't support overburn. Even though i put in 700 mb blank cd i can only burn up to 650 mb. Not to mention it only come with 1 mb cacher (although the pdf file from BTC mention it come with 2 mb of cache). I ordered it from Staples online and i would like to know can i change for another one in a Staples store (if they have any lite-on or mitsumi, haven't sent in the rebate yet)? 🙁

one i just got says top G-

will test it.. i dont have any staples around my area.... so i guess if it works, im keeping it ...(even if it doesnt work that great)
ill update with results.

ok, just buring now, according to Nero, its a BTC BCE24101M and everything but over-burn is supported.
next to burn proof, it says Super-link .

and i dont know if the performance in winxp task manager is accurate, but the cpu usage never went over 8%.
so far so good, its going fast, no noise or anything. burning at 24x on some crappy cdR i have ...

burned successfully at 24x in 4 minutes flat! well not as good as 3 minutes... but lot of improvement over my old 2x which took 40 minutes!..

i guess im going to keep this. hope u guys have good luck as well. time to burn!

been burning fine at 24x and it seems to be working fine.
all cds are burning 4min flat. (including the lead in/out time at the end).

now i have to send the staples rebate form.. in the form it says we have send the receipt. i purchased it online, so what do i send in? the slip that came in the shipping? or the online receipt (the one i printed after ordering?). thanx.

dam mustang you are lucky. My btc burner takes at least 6 :30minutes to burn at 20x. If it did burn at 24x and in 4minutes i would be dam happy.🙁:frown:

I've got my BTC and I gotta say that I love the thing. Burned a very full 80min cd in 3:48 seconds and cpu usage was low enough for me to browse web + aim + mirc + ftp + winamp comfortably. Haven't tried overburning but I gotta say that I'm very very happy with this puppy!

PS. Perhaps my rig has something to do with it:

1.4ghz athlon
256mb ram
Radeon 7500 AGP-DVI
A7V133-Raid
Burning harddisk: IBM 75g 7200 rpm

How do you guys burn a cd with 24x? I can only choose 20 x in nero (5.5.6.2), even though i'd choose 24 x in NTI cd maker, it still burn with 20x (finished a 600 mb cd in 4 mins). 😕

edit : nevermind, just found out i was using 16x media. switch to 24 x media and no problem now.

Hello,

I'm getting ready to send in my rebate, but I was wondering about one thing. The rebate form says to write in the UPC number. Does that number include the number at the beginning and at the end, or just the numbers in-between those "bracketing" numbers?

Does anyone know?

I'm keeping the BTC (Pacific Digital) from Staples because the last time I returned an item, Staples charged my credit card for the coupon. Of course I challenged it but it was a hassle. Staples can sell but don't seem to know how to handle returns.

Everytime I've been asked for a UPC number, it has included the digits on the far left and far right.

Good luck.

Has anyone ever burned a VCD/SVCD to a CD-RW with Nero 5.5? I've tried using the same method as burning a CD-R; but I get a coaster.

Thanks for any help. Sure would be nice to play a VCD in my standalone DVD player.

QUICK UPDATE!!!!

my burner is running so far so good! (i have BTC model btw). everything burns well at 24x and burning iso, mp3, divx, dat files... all burn in 4mins flat.

i was browsing thru oem website and found that they have firmware update here!

however it is for LTN model which probably is for lite on ones only... wonder if this will work on BTC models? their website is really bad, it does not say anything about what model u might have and how this might screw up everything (since they dont provide BTC firmware).it just has this file next to the picture of the box.. so it could be misleading to some ppl.

I have the BTC, and it is crap! I have made three coasters, and it is @ 90-100% CPU usage? What is the deal w/ this drive. I have it as a master on 2nd IDE. What is the dealo?? It took 7 minutes to burn @ "24x". As far as it "buffer -underrun", it is non-existent for me.

i have about 10 so far w/the lite-on from pacific digital
must be a mpg file, encode the avi file first.
go to www.vcdhelp.com they have a section on how to do it step by step.
also not all standalones play vcd's while @ the site above ck and see if your standalone supports it.
i went & bought a apex to play mine on, the other players in the house won't play them

hmm i dont know but my BTC is working great and cpu usage never goes over 10%.. i have it set as sec slave and i am using latest NERO with winXP.

the computer specs are athlon 1.33ghz 256mb ram Geforce3..

Been almost 3 weeks since mailing in the rebate, still says "waiting for paperwork" at the staples rebate site. Should I be worried?

EHmmm.... you just put the disk in and make a copy.

Well thats what I do with regular VCD's if making a copy of them - it's a simple disk copy - no special software/plugin required to do that. 😕

I got the BTC originally. Then found out that is was crap after....after painting it black to match my case!
I was more than a little upset. I spent a week trying to debug this pos. I called "tech support". They told me to try everything I already did, like change positions., media..etc. The BTC BCE is crap. I've learned that if the serial starts with an "A", then its problaby a BTC. I have to delicately sand the black paint off and scrape it out of the lettering. What a pain, it almost wasn't worth it. I then brought it back to staples for a new one, hoping mine was only defective. I got the same serail sequence Axxxxxx. I went to a different Staples and fo0unjd one with a serial that contained only numbers and didn't begin with an A. It was a lite-on. SWEET! Can't be any worse than this BTC piece. The BTC was killing my computer, and I am using a 1800+, with 526m memmory. Just my experince, luckily they didn't examine my returned drive too carefully, removing 4 coats of primer and black paint is not fun!

man i waited way too long to return mine so now i am paying for it. I got a BTC POS like alot of people here. I am talking to tech support now and am trying to convince them to let me RMA it. Oh well i guess its my own fault for not taking it back right away.🙁
