How many times are you going to try and slam the Go? Stop crying already. Dont want it? Dont buy it, its that simple.

Also, he has no idea how much it costs to make. Hes making an ignorant statement, saying it costs less than the 3000 to make.

The PSP Go is almost like the DS Lite version of the PSP, so I don't understand why it costs $250. The DS Lite launched for $20 less than the DS.

No, its not even close to the same.

Uh hi, the title of the thread is Pachter: PSP Go price is a rip off.

Are your feelings hurt by a discussion about a gaming console?

Seriously...

And yes, it IS the same as the DS to the DS Lite, since the PSPGo is a product upgrade/refresh of an existing product line, just like the DS to DS Lite.

I don't know who it was but there was some people seriously defending it in the other thread. I like my psp a ton but I don't see how this price could be justified or how anyone could seriously defend it. On top of everything else, you can't even hack the new one, sell your games, buy used ones, etc.

Sony is running themselves into the ground with these stupid ass decisions.

well 2 of em have found this thread 😛

Of course you can't hack it. Its not even out yet. Give it time.

Well just saying the only way to currently hack it is through the battery which they changed and made part of the hardware (like an Iphone). So far in the however many years the PSP has been out that is the only known way to do it. Otherwise the hardware is the same.

really. I didn't know that. I guess I have the 1st gen psp so I didn't have to deal with pandora battery. I figured it was just for those that bricked their psp.

You talk about hacking as if it's something good. How about you make something and we just steal it?

PSP 3000 $170 http://www.buy.com/prod/sony-p...loc/108/210477551.html
Sony 16GB $74 http://www.buy.com/retail/prod...d=32646244&dcaid=17902

that's $244 total... What is the PSP Go offering in exchange for the loss of the UMD?

Bluetooth and...it's...cooler looking? Also, Sony is planning on having a way to get your UMD games onto your PSP Go (probably some download based on game registration or something...I don't really know, at it may or may not be free). Most consumers don't realize how cheap memory cards can be bough online, so 16gb for an extra $80 may sound good to the unknowing customer.

Also, unlike the DS, they're not planning on phasing out the 3000 model. If they were, they would probably have the Go at a cheaper price. Plus, new model (not even really the same style like the DS Lite was to the DS), new manufacturing costs at first, I'm guessing (plus the ongoing production of 3000).

I'm still not buying one, though.

News flash: Home brew isnt stealing. There are plenty of free, user created games/apps that work with a cracked PSP.

Sigh.. more ignorance.

No, why would I be? If anyone is upset, its the Sony haters. Which is a pretty silly thing to do.

And its not the same. The Lite didnt add anything new, nothing. Its the same clam shell design. I have one (two in fact), and its great, but its not the same. The Go has a totally different design, built in memory, and bluetooth. The Lite is same design, just smaller. The DSi is $40 more than the Lite, with cameras, and lose of GBA slot. I dont think its a rip off to charge more for it either. Cameras arent that cheap.

I dont know why its so hard to understand, that producing a totally new designed console, is more expensive than producing an old one. The original PSP was $250 when it came out, and it dropped. Just like every console after time. After time, it becomes cheaper to make, and prices drop. This isnt the same PSP, its a lot different.

Pachter has been known to talk out of his butt before, this isnt new. But if you have factual evidence that the Go cost the same, or cheaper than the 3000 to make, as he claims, please feel free to post it.

Hmm, I defend a lot of things from ignorance. I have a PS3, Wii, PSP, and two DS's. Had a 360, but guess what, it died on me, twice. I no longer have one. Feel free to taking your bias accusing finger elsewhere.

And if anyone had a "massive fail" at E3, it was Nintendo. Worst showing by far. Aside from Meteroid, nothing that exciting. And Im leary about it, after the last 3d version.

For those comparing PSP Go to a DS Lite, isn't the PSP2000 the one to compare?

DS -> DS Lite
PSP 1000 -> PSP 2000

PSP2000 was slimmer, better battery, and I think brigher screen.....just like the DS Lite.

Plus, did everyone forget that PSP original was $249 when it first came out?

Riiight. I'm willing to bet 100% of the people that have hacked their PSP have some illegal shit on it.

I can see it now, the PS3 Slim will launch with no Blu-ray drive and cost $599.

"It's a different form factor!"
"The PS3 launched at $599, remember!"
"It has an extra USB slot!"

😛

Don't get too upset, Pachter is sorry:

I sincerely regret the choice of words in my response to Geoff Keighley's question in last week's Bonus Round, where I said that Sony is "ripping off" the consumer by pricing the PSP Go at $249.99. I made a poor choice of words, and I do NOT think that Sony is doing anything nefarious in choosing their pricing strategy. The company has the right to price its products at a point that they think is competitive, and has no obligation to sell products at lower than a competitive price. They have been subsidizing purchases of the PS3 since launch, to the tune of 22 million sold at a loss of $100 or more apiece (on average), so if they are able to make a profit on the PSP Go, more power to them. They are pricing at a point that positions the PSP Go competitively with the iPod Touch, and the PSP Go arguably has much more value than the Apple product. Notwithstanding my view that the price point is too high to generate more than a few million units sold, I really think my comment was unfair, and would appreciate your allowing me to clear the air on IndustryGamers.com.

Looks like either SONY, his boss, or someone from advertising got to him.

I don't have a PSP, but I have a flash card in my DS and it has absolutely nothing illegal on it - just copies of all my purchased games and some homebrew software.

I know you're kidding, but that's a pretty silly argument. The slim PS1 and PS2 were both created as, just that...slim models of their consoles with the same functionality. They also phased on the "fat" models. This is very similar to the DS -> Lite, PSP 1000 -> 2000 as well. Same design principal for the most part, same functionality, but cheaper.

Now, with the PSP Go, they're still continuing the 3000 model. That alone will add extra cost, up keeping two handhelds. Not only that, but the design is very different, considering it's smaller and has a sliding mechanism. Sure, you lose the UMD drive, but also gain 16gb flash memory and bluetooth (which, to the average consumer, would add a LOT of cost to a PSP 3000 model).

Had they stuck with a very similar, yet maybe slightly smaller, model (no slide screen) and phased out the 3000, I'd imagine this would cost close to the same as what the 3000 costs now.

Yes, it could be cheaper, but I don't think it's totally unreasonable either. I think a lot of this whining/hating is just silly. If you don't want to pay it, don't buy it. That's exactly what I'm going to do.

Now, if Sony either 1) doesn't find a way to let you download your already purchased UMD games or 2) doesn't let you do it for free (or VERY cheap), then I believe hatred is justified. Until then, though, it's all just speculation and guessing.

Well he still basically insinuates that they're overpricing to make up for the fact that they're losing their asses on the PS3 and have to make up that money somewhere.

It's a joke. I presented no arguments.

I don't want to pay it and I'm not going to buy it but I'm still going to call it out for its unreasonable price, which is the topic of this thread.

I don't think anyone is bothered by the fact that the PSP Go costs more than the PSP-3000. That makes perfect sense. What doesn't is pricing it at $250 which is well beyond the cost of a base Xbox 360 and right next to the Wii. I don't really care if it costs Sony $230 to make one, that's too expensive for a handheld system running a 4-5 year-old platform.
