Actually, I liked the race card - it is over the top, but considering PAB <<< Chevrolet in firepower he has to go in with a bit of headroom just to even out the odds. Racial discrimination is more prevalent when the protagonists span social hierarchies - in either direction - I find it totally believable that those mechanics saw an Asian guy come in and figured he wouldn't be as assertive as some white or black dude - that doesn't mean they thought the Asian guy was inferior; they just wrongly attributed a characteristic based on race. That doesn't necessarily make the mechanics racist but it is entirely plausible that PAB's race was a factor in their decision to run their scheme.

Glad that you know enough to question a mechanic's diagnosis. I am sure I have been taken in by mechanics on several occasions but considering I know very little about cars, there's no way I would be able to put a fight like you did :(

You are a very good writer. One of the best I have seenon this board. Congrats to you. I must admit, your race claims may be a little uncessary or dubious. I think mechanics and car dealerships con EVERYONE that doesn't know better (ie most people), not just minorities.

If you did it as a strategic move, then it was pretty smart. Everyone knows yelling fire will get you more help than, well, "help."

While I hate it when the users here bash someone for "calling the race card" (since I feel it's approrpriate more often than not), I think in this situation, it was very questionable.

Okay ... well you still have yet to answer anyone's question where they asked what made you feel as though you were being discriminated against for the sheer fact you are asian.

Simple - Their melbourne store tries to screw me over and their palm bay store does the right thing. I'd call that discrimination.

If you guys think this is playing the race card, you haven't seen me play the race card. This is pale in comparison to the legal dispute I'm having with my former employer where I'm claiming - and can prove - that white employees recieved greater latitude, greater chances at advancement, and preferential treatment.

If you guys read the thread, you will note that I have stated that I feel I have been discriminated against in that these two jerks tried to scam me and everyone else treated me right.

You know, I've got to ask everyone here something: Has ANYONE here had to butt heads against anyone in their life?

By way of background, here's the resume.

I fought Rathmann. I won. How did I win? I wrote a clear, concise letter outlining what's going on and I didn't take any BS. Playing a racial discrimination claim is for the most part a strategic move used to seal the deal. Sometimes you have to light a big enough fire under someone's ass if you want them to move. Always play the offense.

I fought Dell because they screwed up a $1000 credit over FOUR YEARS AGO. How did I win? I told them names, dates, and got in their face. I played offensively and I got my check. This is ONE of probably HALF A DOZEN disputes I've had with Dell on behalf of myself and other members of AT who know what I did for them.

The reason I win is because I KNOW HOW TO PLAY THE GAME. That's how it works in today's society. You have to have thick skin, not be afraid get in their face and use everything that can give you a leg up.

So if you were the same ethnicity as the people at both dealerships and the same thing happend, would it still be racism? Of course not. You can be discriminated against without it being racial.

That's not discrimination, it's just sh|tty customer service from one dealer and not the other. Guess what? Us crackers get it to. You have absolutely no claim to racial discrimination based on what you've told us here.

That is just fvcking pathetic and disgraceful. This kind of attitude just perpetuates racism. You don't want a level playing field - you want an entitlement. You've taken a legitimate and noble qwest for equality and respect and turned it into something cheap and pithy. No doubt it works in our pc society - but it's only out of fear not respect. And because the card is played so often for b.s. like this it cheapens it when there are real legitimate issues.

Sometimes you have to light a big enough fire under someone's ass if you want them to move. Always play the offense.

You're just a condescending little prick today aren't you?

You could have won this fight based just on your knowledge, research, persitence, writing skills etc. And i'd be among the first to congradulate you. But maybe you just won it because you're asian. Somehow that doesn't seem as satisfying to me - it seems pathetic. But it's your pride.

Except you didn't have the race card to play in this situation, because race does not appear to have been an issue. You got scammed by one dealership and treated fairly by the other because there were a couple of jacka**es working at the first dealership.

When you got in Dell's face, did you claim that they were discriminating against you because you were Asian? I had Dell screw up three laptops that I ordered and I played the game well too and got about $1000 in freebees out of them, and I managed to do so without screaming racism.

I think we should put you on the bad traders list too, because at the rate your going, if something you buy shows up DOA, you'll leave the person bad heatware claiming they're racist.

And because you're such a pompous ass about playing the race card needlessly when you already had a valid claim, I'm going to forward all of this thread to Rathmann Chevorlet.

Jim Rathmann Chevorlet,

I wanted to write to you to inform you about a recent incident when two technicians were fired for trying to take advantage of a customer. If the allegations are true, I think the technicians should be disciplined, but the owner of the car has been bragging online about how he successfully played the race card to get a refund.

If you visit the link below, you can see what he is bragging about. He also shows a picture of a check #703843 with his refund.

I don't agree with how your technicians diagnosed his automobile and I also disapprove of his handling of the situation by admittingly playing the race card. I just want to make your business aware of the entire story.

http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=38&threadid=1845868&enterthread=y

Oh, and don't bother trying to edit any posts PAB. I already copied and pasted everything into a word document and saved your picture of the check too.

"Formidable claims"? Sheesh what an idiot. Actions like yours make it harder to stop racism. Legitimate complaints get lumped into the same grouping as your BS.

Gobadgrs, I had the same thought. In fact, the two guys that were accused of being racist could (and should) sue PAB for defamation -- he's already admitted that the claim had no basis in fact and was meant strictly as a tool to get what he wanted. They should be able to show damages ......

I'm going to forward this to the dealer as well.

Interesting approach, but don't expect the dealer to reply or open this up again. It would just expose thems to

1. bad publicity about trying to ripoff a customer (which they absolutely did) + allegations of racism (which they probably didn't, but the race card works).
2. wrongful termination lawsuits from the two employees.
3. more hassle then its worth for $500, or whatever the check was for.

Your #1 is kinda funny, since the dealer JUST CALLED ME about this.

One of the guys there recieved this forwarded as an email. He basically asked me if I wrote it and I'm like - Yeah, I did.

He asked me to add, if it hasn't been already that THIS SITUATION HAS BEEN TOTALLY TAKEN CARE OF. They took care of the monetary situation 100% and threw in some additional freebies to make up for being completely inconvenienced. I really think that the current management is pretty cool since it really takes someone to step up to the plate and said "Hey, we're wrong. Whoops. Lets fix this."

And I stand by my original claim. I can't help but think two guys were out to me for a ride on this, if I didn't think it wasn't worth mentioning - it wouldn't have been brought up.

Like I said, they want to just sweep it under the carpet, because they did fvck up in trying to rip you off. That and your playing of the race card, while pathetic and disgusting, is effective.

They took care of the monetary situation 100% and threw in some additional freebies to make up for being completely inconvenienced. I really think that the current management is pretty cool since it really takes someone to step up to the plate and said "Hey, we're wrong. Whoops. Lets fix this."

Sure they were out to take you for a ride - but there is nothing to indicate that it was racially motivated. At least nothing you've presented here. Just the normal dealer fscking over a customer which happens all the time.

Congrads and thanks for the PM letting me know. The whole point is that while what the dealer did was wrong, there is no evidence of it being racially motivated, despite your admitted playing of a race card to get what you wanted. I just thought the dealer should know that their employees, while acting unethically, weren't doing so because of racism, at least according to all evidence that you have provided in the letter and in this thread.

Yes I understand both employees are terminated, but if they are going to be terminated, it should be on the basis of trying to get a customer to pay for additional repair work and not alleged racial discrimination, evidence of which you have failed to demonstrate in every single post in this thread, even going so far as admitting "I KNOW HOW TO PLAY THE GAME" by using alleged racism to get what you want.

Congrads PAB. YOU KNOW HOW TO PLAY THE GAME. When something doesn't go your way, regardless if you have a valid claim or not, make sure you scream racism at the top of your lungs. Because after all, as long as you get what you want, its OK right? Even if you have to lower yourself ethically and morally to do it?

He can play the race card if he sees fit. The honest truth is that you don't know how he was treated.... It sounds funny, but people usually tend to treat people that look more like them with higher levels of respect, etc... It's a very subtle thing, but race discrimination, as well as gender discrimination is VERY prevalent in the business world. Age discrimination is the most difficult to prove...

GoBadgers, it's good not to abuse race discrimination claims, but without being present or knowing the motives of the said employees, you'll never know whether or not the claims are legit or not.

Truthfully, it's not their loss if the dealership has to order warranty parts to repair it. They were trying to overcharge him....the motives probably were money, but they may have seen his race as a perceived weakness in his automotive abilities. They may not have done this if he were a "good ole' boy" that's been rebuilding engines since his daddy's cousin bought a garage.

You're a complete and utter lunatic. In order for society to function, there must be lines, standards of conduct...any mature person knows better than to knock out all the stops in any dispute, because that drags society down as it helps them up. Using "anything" to give you a leg up, no matter how unfounded it may be, is a destructive philosophy that resolves nothing and just increases the hatred and bigotry in the world. If you fight like an animal, PAB, you ARE an animal. Spewing hatred isn't negotiation...it's scorched earth.
