So what weight would you recommend to a beginner of P90x? Currently, all I have at my disposal is 5 lb weights. I can easily buy different ones, but that's all I have. Would that be fine for a beginner or would higher weights be a better idea?

5lb is too light. I'm sure you can already do a huge number of reps with 5lb weights so that's not going to provide enough resistance. I wouldn't buy fixed weight dumbbells for home use, get an adjustable dumbbell set like this: http://www.walmart.com/ip/CAP-Barbel...-Case/11089974

Then just buy more plates. You can probably find dumbbells and plates for cheap at Craigslist or garage sales in your area so check those out too.

Good job, OP.

i've been doing p90x for a week and doing a modified paleo diet (i've been doing the diet for about a month now). i think i lost roughly 8 lbs this week and put on some muscle.

I did P90x twice from May of last year to December. Lost about 35-38 lbs.

Well how I've been doing it is going for 8 reps as a max. If I get over 8, then I up the weight next time so 8 again is the most I can do.

I think it is fine for most people. Most everyone, including me, doesn't need to be super huge. But I am gaining muscle with the above method.

You're gaining less functional muscle than you could if you performed higher resistance, lower weight exercise. Sure, you're getting stronger, but not as fast and not as strong in the long run due to your rep range.

p90x really works, if you have the will to finish every video to the best of your ability.

for those asking about equipment, i would recommend the following:

adjustable weights over resistance band, look for selectech, powerblock at least 5-45 range
push up bar, get the p90x power stand, expensive but really nothing else on market that works as well.
pull up bar capable of wide pull up. measure your door make sure you have the proper clearance, or you can get the pull up tower if you have the space, make sure you can do wide and close grip pull up with those.
fitness mat, i recommend fitness equipment mats or those toddler play mats. tape the joints.
a sturdy chair w/ back.
