Im going to try a 1.7m on my P4B533 board, should have it in a few days (trade for my lapped 2.0A~Pastorjay)

I wonder what Ill get to...I use the onboard crap, 4 USB devices and onboard sound as well.
So far the XMS3500c2 is at 2-3-3-7 @ 159fsb, 3:4, 424mhz, 2.7v
Ive got a nice shiny 'flat' lapped penny for a shim (if needed!)

dbwillis ~ using alpha pal? remove the plastic washers from the topside of the standoffs and use thin paper motherboard washers insted. its only a very small difference in height but may keep you from needing the penny.

I ended up using the penny 🙂 , but i was only able to manage 172fsb, at 175fsb the bios corrupted, reflashed (with 1011) and then retried, then it wouldnt boot up (cpu overworked voice message), tried 1.60v (bios), still no go.
Retried 170fsb, no problem (mem at actual 1:1), retried 175, no boot up (cpu voice message).
Ended up putting the 2.4B back in without the heatspreader, temps down 2'C under Prime95.

Did you try turning off the onboard stuff to see if that would help? I had it up to 215 before my ram went south...

I tried the USB and 185 worked, but I use USB, so thats not an option...didnt try the sound, I will when I have more time next week, just wanted to get some type of idea what it'd do

Originally I used 1014.001 (beta), thugs mentioned over on asusboards that 1011 was faster, so I 1st tried with 1014, then when it corrputed, reflashed with 1011, still had the same problem at bootup, so went back to 1014 and the 2.5B

I planned on using this CPU on my 'server' (when I build a new gaming rig, the P4B533 will turn into the server), that will only have 1 parallel port enabled, all else disabled, so 200fsb shouldnt be a problem then I think. 😕

And I verified the PSU is showing 20a on the 12v line (Enermax 465-ve~431watt), all voltages are stable:

load:
12v - 11.72
5v - 5.134
3v - 3.34

vcore 1.616v (1.625 in BIOS)

I had the lock set at 66/33, Ill retry the 67/34 and see what that does...

tried it again, 1008 bios, com ports disabled, USB disabled, onboard audio disabled, 175 yes, 180 no, same CPU overclocked message, tried 1.60v, same thing.
Tried 1011, no luck, tried 1013, no luck either, oh well.

Quick question for you guys using Alpha... Is it a design with the HS itself that's causing the contact (or lack thereof) with the core or the is it when using Alpha with P4B533?

I believe its the washer ontop of the motherboard, but below the standoffs the Alpha screws onto...the standoffs are a bit high, replace the thick plastic washer with a thin paper one (the red ones that come with wotherboards) and you should be OK. I used a penny, circa 1961 as a shim

It is having used the 8045 on the P4B533 with a P4 that has the heatspreader/shim on it which causes the P4B533 to bend over time, resulting in less firm contact when the 8045 is used on a P4 without that heatspreader/shim over the core. Aren't you going H2O, Sean😉?

Thanks db. I'm trying to avoid using a shim (my lapping skill is... well... very minimal at best... 😀) Trying to find a best air cooling solution...

Erik, well, I still haven't given up on the P4m just yet... My H2O is kinda busy with this. 😉
