So at least you aren't throwing out current boxes in favor of those new boxes? Phew 😉

Nopes, at least that's what I'm told. If I am, I'm gonna bi*ch slap them all the way back to their mumma's house.
Mavrick007: Strange thing is that they've proposed 1.2Ghz Banias with 1GB RAM for the notebooks. LIKE DUH. Mostly managers use notebooks and 512 is MORE than enough. Whatever they're smoking, I'd like to have some for the fun of it 🙂 RAMs are good, but I do need a dual display for my work though 😛

yeh, and dell could buy a athlon xp 2500 wich would bitchify a pentium 4 2.4ghz, much less a celeron 2.6 that costs more than the athlon xp 2500. i will never understand why they chose to put such poor performing chips when you have a MUCH faster alternative for cheaper.

Just wondering if anyone has taken into concideration what type of P4's theese are and what type of ram.
They could very much be socket 478 willamettes wunning on SDRAM. If thats the case the celeron would be an upgrade. Though if they are running on RDRAM or SC DDR then like everyone said the celeron is crap. The devil is in the details, and we need more details.....

he said they are older boxes that they are going to replace. Everyone seems to assume they are DDR boxes, i have a hunch they are SDRAM boxes.

And they will still bitchify the Celerys.

Xeon proper is effectively a Pentium4 that's dual-capable. Xeon DP and Xeon MP are different, of course. The other attraction to the 400SC is that you can get it with SCSI. I'm not a developer, but from what I understand, it can be quite disk-intensive in the fashion that SCSI revels in where ATA drives are tripping over their tongues. And then there's the long lifespan and reliability of SCSI drives, too. I :heart: my SCSI drives even for daily-driver stuff, and when it is time for the heavy I/O, they can really cut loose 😀Originally posted by: ugh

VirtualLarry: Believe it or not, the machine which mechBgon recommended has nearly the same spec as a "server". I just can't believe where they get these "experts" from..
Well, yes, the 400SC's are "servers" according to Dell, but they make decent workstation machines too, and Dell often runs a deep-discount promotion on them, making them a decent deal, as I understand it. (And from reading about several long threads in the Hot Deals forum about them in the past.) I've not worked with a 400SC model myself though.
I would expect servers to be Xeon based. Unless I'm getting old in Intel technology {g}
AMDHardcoreFan: Since we're buying from Dell, I don't think we can get any AMD based systems from them. Which sux eggs...
My condolences 🙁 On the bright side, if you get a good computer to replace it, it's going to just seem that much perkier 🙂Originally posted by: ugh
Gahh.. Just found out that these 1.8 Willamette I've been using is running on SDRAM... PC133 baby 🙁

Man, the guys handling purchases at your office must suck...I'd fire myself for buying a P4/SDRAM combo.
How about HP d325's? AthlonXP, nForce2 with dual-VGA onboard... linkieOriginally posted by: ugh

I'd fire myself too if I were them. Their choices could be due to some budget constraints.
