P4 or AMD??

AMD = great performance at a great price.. never been a really big AMD fan, until i decided to go for an athlon xp 1700 ;]

MODS, PLEASE LOCK THIS PIECE OF CRAP UP.

Go to the front page and read some reviews on the Athlon XP and the Pentium 4.

NOTHING TO SEE HERE, MOVE ALONG

It's all about personal preference. There is no clear winner. If your budget is of absolute concern, an AMD CPU would probably be the way to go. If it isn't, and you like Intel CPU's, go with Intel. Read some reviews and make your own decision. There are a lot of biased people on these forums who seem like robots created by the organization that they support. Don't let them turn you ignorant, look at both sides.

Hey guys I am planning to buy a new comp but I am not sure which is better? Someone please advise me.

Hopefully you're not trying to start a fight with this. In answer to your question, one is not better than the other. They both have good points and not so good points. Here's the way I see it:

Intel:

+Very stable platforms
+High bandwidth for bandwidth intensive apps.
+Well engineered cooling solutions
-High cost
-Low IPC

AMD:

+Superior FPU and very high IPC.
+Low cost
+More platform choices (MP, DDR, SDR, w/wo Dual channel DDR etc.)
-Stable platforms, but require better understanding of how components work together and must choose accordingly.
-Thermal solutions require more tweaking and expense

Thanks to all that give me a decent answer. As for the others, you people need to calm down! Its only a question, no need to get all defensive. You don't get a cookie for this!

OMG!!! OH NO! AIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!! NOOOOOO!O!OO!O!!!!

<< Did you miss the other 4,599,382,684 threads/flame wars about this? 😕 >>

I thought there were 4,599,382,685, but I could be off,..........shrug.......😉

I like AMD at the moment, until Intel offers a better processor then AMD. That's my suggestion, go with the best performer for your money, and AMD happens to hold that title at the moment.

With the new Northwood Pentium 4s, they're pretty evenly matched in terms of performance. However, the Athlon Palomino wins on basis of price.

Right now I'd give the nod to an AMD solution. But when the Intel Northwoods at 2.2+ start arriving along with some decent i845D motherboards the situation might change.

The bottom line is that either will fit the bill, though one choice will take more of your bills than the other.

Don't get an i845D based board. Get an Intel i850 based board, a SiS 645 based board, or a Via P4X266A based board. The i845D is awful. Also, sooner or later Via will release the P4X333.

<< I got an AMD Duron system right now and I do't like it. No, it has nothing to do with AMD CPUs. I personally think they are a better value, but all the AMD boards are plaqued with issues, until U pick up one that uses pure AMD chipsets, w/o shoddy VIA southbridges.

My board could be okay, it works yes, but a glitch here, a glitch there make you think of going Intel... Go Intel if U can afford!
>>

That's not quite correct. I'm guessing you have a Via KT133A chipset mated with an SB Live sound card, right? Via chipsets are typically outstanding.

<< P4 or AMD?? >>

Well, one's a processor, and the other is a huge corporation. So given the choice between buying one of the two...buying AMD may make me more money in the long run, but since I don't have the ~$5.7 billion to do so, I'd get the P4.

😉

AMD. for my opinions why, just read the other posts that are pro-AMD. i think there are more pro-AMD than pro-p4

Ditto. BTW people are going to ride you for asking this because of so many hostile flame wars begin this way. But seeing as your new I we can let it go and save you all the reading some of us bother to do.
