P4 Excretment edition. LOL!

No, seriously. The AthlonFX series was no worse than the P4EE as it was just basicly taking an opteron 148 and calling it an 'FX" (A shamefull ripoff of Nvidia I might say)

Why would they want to name the Athlon after me?

Not if you're running 32bit code, which I hear is still used occasionally even today.

I wonder if the >$1000 Itaniums are actually faster than the P4 EE...the P4's aren't THAT far from the Madison Itanium II/6 MB, and to get below 1K, all of the higher end Itaniums are out of the question.

INT wise, no, the Itanium II series are probably slower. FP, however is a different story.

http://www.spec.org/cpu2000/results/cfp2000.html

The FP for the P4-EE is around 1500, a pretty significant boost from the 1250 of the regular 3.2C.

Even the modest 1.3Ghz / 3MB model posts an FP score of 1800. The lower end 1Ghz models post around the 1400 mark. And the slowest 900Mhz/1.5MB (which are not made anymore) post about 1200. Real world, the Itanium II has shown that it bests the P4.

For reference, the 1.5Ghz/6MB posts a score of about 2200.

The Register has been calling it "Extremely Expensive" with cause. One of my co-workers refers to the pricing scheme as "Geek Tax". Fits.
