That sounds like FUD if I've ever heard it.

"That sounds like FUD if I've ever heard it."

I've seen a reviewer mention this (sorry can't give a url and can't be bothered searching, but no doubt someone will fish it up if this becomes a big issue)

I recall my housemate's PC (P4 1.8 @ 2.8 with 1gb of PC2700) behaving oddly as well.
I hate to sound all "airy-fairy" without any solid facts but I have heard of several "oddities" with P4 boxes.

A workmate admin at a medium sized company has a Duron 800 / Via machine with a 12x burner and a P4 1.6 machine (intel chipset) and 12x burner - they both have 256mb and Win2k (I beleive) - the Duron can multitask and burn - the P4 can not.

again it's not really "fantastic information" and sounds like FUD but I've heard this stuff multiple times, either way you don't need to beleive me, I'm happy to be skeptical myself about P4 machines without you beleiving me.

Ummm, yeah... that's the first time I've ever heard that a P4 cannot multitask.

Well I don't doubt it can multi task, but perhaps it's not as good as the Duron - perhaps there's some kind of issue with cache flushing or something beyond my spectrum of knowledge.

Perhaps it IS all FUD, none the less I've heard it from multiple people - plus I recall seeing my house mates PC do something weird a few weeks ago, was really quite slow and strange (sorry I honestly can't recall what it was)

If / when I find more information I'll let you all know, but it certainly makes me feel the P4 architecture isn't the best.

all anecdotal...

if the p4 really was inferior at multitasking, dont you think it would be common knowledge? its not like it is a rare piece of hardware.

AbRASiON, to give you the benefit of the doubt, I can come up with a sample scenario.

Well I could see if the Duron machine had DMA enabled and the P4 system did not (PIO), the P4 system would use 100% CPU while burning and the Duron system would not. Thus the Duron machine might multitask fine while burning when the P4 system did not.

However, that would be due to a configuration error on one system and not on the other (when equally possible on either system). But in my opinion to then say that the P4 can't multitask is still FUD even in the above scenario, it was caused by user ignorance/forgetfullness (not to say that that is the case with your friends, you have not provided enough information to make that call).

Its definitely a burner setup issue if all things are equal. Learn to force UDMA mode in Win2k/XP and it will improve.

I must say I'm impressed by the rise of P4 supporters of late. Its a new trend in the AT forums.
