now this is a funny story

She sounds completely nuts. Can't understand what she expected to happen, doing that? Given her bizarre self-incriminating behaviour, if it were up to me I'd have just put her on the first flight back to the US and let them decide what to do with her - not sure what locking her up for a year in Australia (at Australian tax-payer expense?) accomplishes.

Or does her behaviour come under "normal for Americans"? (like the term doctors allegedly write in people's medical notes 'NFN' - 'normal-for-Norfolk')

Sounds similar to my idea.

Each successive government elevates an ever-increasing number of its supporters into the House of Lords (as each time they need to stuff more of them in there, to overturn the existing majority in that chamber for the 'other team'). Thus the number of Lords will increase exponentially - till eventually everybody in the country will be a Lord, and we'll all get to vote on legislation. We'll also all get to claim the £300 a day attendance allowance merely by turning up and signing in and then going home again (as the Lords tend to do), thus eliminating all poverty as well.

In the US you could achieve the same result by repeatedly expanding and packing the Supreme Court - ultimately, every American will be a Supreme Justice and be able to claim gifts from rich litigants. The only problem being that the process of creating a Supreme Court Justice is much more drawn-out and time-consuming than that for sticking your party donors or supporters into the House of Lords, so it will be a much more tedious and costly process to get there. But eventually everybody will be rich-and-powerful.

If you're not going to abolish the House of Lords then elevating the entire populace to the peerage is the reasonable solution to having a House of Lords.

I think this may have something to do with the case:

The court was told in recent years, Goodson was using psychedelic drugs, synthetic cannabis and crystal meth amphetamines.

Maybe she wanted to go to Australian Clown School with a gun so she could be the Aussie Joker.
