Not horrifying so much as quite bizarre. It's weird that people seem to overestimate _everything_.

Why the heck would people think that 40% are veterans, for example? Or that over a quarter are Muslims? Or that nearly a third of the entire US population live in NYC?

Seems that a third of Americans are Muslim, a third are Jewish, nearly half are Catholic and the rest can't do basic math?

Not sure who the 'morons' are to which you refer. Seems to me the tweeter is being sarcastic (is that not a sarcasm smiley?).

Or are you saying those who favour raw milk are the 'morons'? That may be the case, but presumably if the stuff is being marketed and labelled as such, the law allows it and they are willingly taking the risk?

The guy that made the post (santos) was being sarcastic. That's all.
Didn't think a /s would have been necessary.

Some of it is simply being bad at math, but a lot of it is a bias of assuming everyone is like you. In addition, some people have been conditioned to be absolutely terrified of something so they massively overestimate the importance or occurrence of said things, like Muslims or quicksand.
