I wonder what kind of person Assad is. The only view I can think of that fits the evidence is that he craves power and little more, partly because I can't imagine anything more pointless than claiming that you're the leader of a country when you've had to brutalise the population into submission, it's like winning a chess tournament by murdering your opponents.

I don't know about that. He's seen what happens to deposed leaders, Hussein, Gaddafi, etc and very likely is just acting in his own self interest.

Do you think Putin even made the offer? Assad is only of any value to Putin when he has something to offer Putin. Assad has let Putin showcase his weaponry for export sales, given Putin training opportunities, given Putin another opportunity to try and make the west look bad, to give a Chechnya style example of Russia standing up to extremism, gain prestige in the region, etc. If Assad retired to Russia none of that happens.

Assad was lucky that Putin felt it in his best interests to intervene. If he hadn't I suspect that Assad would have been in Moscow last year or possible even sooner.
