Anyways, for any fan of the games, to have it all in once centralized location, this is friggin SWEET.

I got the Steam announcement too but my question is if you already own some of these games, how can you get it connected to the Steam network?

I was a diehard Quake 1 gamer and I have Quake 1 running in my system now but it does not show up on my Steam list of games.

For $9.95, it seems pretty steep. However, I would be tempted if I knew there was a strong multiplayer community of Quake 1 (especially CTF) that existed on Steam...

Anyone have any thoughts?

LOL. Speaking of which, anyone remember that Quake Shareware CD that iD put out about 5-7 years ago that had all the full versions of every iD game ever made on it? I think about a month after it came out, key generators popped up all over the internet. Course, it didn't have Doom 3 or Q3 or Q2 on there, but it has all the other games listed.

I've been tempted to get this just to see if putting it on steam pulls the quake community together. I tried playing some quake 2 a couple months ago and couldn't find a server, nor did I feel like hunting one down through irc. So I just hit CS up on steam and played some scoutknives..closest to rail gun match as I could get. But paying for the convenience of it being on steam when I have Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4 already on disc isn't worth it, unless theres something that you can only get into servers with the steam version or whatever.

So whats the guarantee that these will run on XP? I have most of the games listed (minus RTCW, herectic?, and D3 exp) but many wont run on XP (wolfenstein FTW!). Im not sure if the D3 exp and the new wolfenstein are worth 60$ but I may grab it if it gets all the games to run on XP.

They are supposidly using some DOS compatibility program for it all

They are supposedly using DosBox to run the older games under XP and Vista which is causing the GPL people to be up in arms because they didn't put the license doc in with the download.

In the same sentence you not only managed to mis-state the nature of the GPL dispute you also managed to brush off "GPL people" as nutcase troublemakers who are whining about a text file not included with the game. Way to go, champ! :thumbsup:

Here's what the issue actually is: people are reporting that Valve is using DOSBox to run older DOS titles. I cannot confirm this as I have not bought the games myself. To comply with GPL license, which is what DOSBox is licensed under, if you are using GPL code (software) in your software - which Valve is apparently doing, you must release the source code for your software that contains code licensed under GPL. Valve didn't clear this with people who wrote DOSBox and did not supply the source code for the modifications they made to GPL software.

They could've easily avoided the whole thing by writing their own DOS emulator or porting the games to Win32 environment - like Doom has been been ported by iD themselves before.

To make it short, Valve screwed up and we'll see where this is going end up.

I bought it, I actually like the Steam distribution method. This will be the 2nd and 3rd time I've paid for some of these games (Quake, Quake 2, Quake 3), but it has a number of firsts - Doom 3, RTCW.

Primary appeal is not having to track down my discs, just the other day I had the urge to play quake 3 but hell if I can find one of my discs for it.

Try copying the install directory into the common folder in steam. It may work, though probably not.

Edit: That's if you already own the games on hard copies and wanna see if you can get steam to pick them up.

Yep, I've still got it around here somewhere...

It wasn't exactly a key generator, it was QCRACK. I bought that CD for $3 the other day even though I still have full boxed copies of most everything.

How exactly did I brush off GPL people to be nutcase troublemakers? The report that I saw stated that Valve/ID didn't ship the older games with a copy of the GPL documentation that is required. Learn to read and not jump to conclusions..

Someone explain to me how we can get games that we already own to work with Steam.

I haven't tried moving Quake 1 into the Steam folder yet but I will try that when I get home.
