Sheesh - this is getting insane. I just got back from some afternoon hockey where I dislocated my shoulder again (fourth time this year). I'm a goalie and basically did a diving save with my arm out - but my body weight then came down hard on the joint and pop...

So I'm laying there on the ice, everyone crowded around me and all I'm thinking is "I'm NOT going to the ER AGAIN for this" (I spent a couple hours in the ER with a dislocated shoulder - same shoulder hurt the same way - a couple months ago). So I sat up grabbed my dislocated arm with my other one, and pulled it in a downward motion (same as the ER people did) and felt it finally pop back into the socket.

It hurt like hell, believe me.

So I am going to call a Sports Medicine place in the morning and schedule some physio-therapy... but has anyone had experience with dislocated shoulders before? What did you do about it? how did you strengthen it to stop it happening again?

you realize that after the 3rd time, dislocated shoulders usually need some sort of surgery

when you keep dislocating, it just gets easier and easier to do it...thats why you usually have surgery. Most likely a lot of cutting and pasting of ligaments and tendons.

Well this is coming from a peep who knows, it's surgery time.

Dislocated mine the first time 2 years ago, did it about 7 more times up till 3 months ago and then had my surgery, 3 tendons reattached and the socket repaired.

Time for surgery dude. If you dont get it fixed, its gonna keep happening and you will probably do more serious damage.

Viper:

Thats the only good part - after her initial shock and concern, Elita's next response was "Oooooo - just like Mel Gibson!" ;):D

hmm that sucks. You will definitely need surgery. I dislocated my shoulder once; I was on a trampoline, and I landed on my stomach with my arms in front of me, and my friend landed on my right shoulder. I heard a "pop" and my shoulder hurt. Luckily it went back in by itself though...

Tough luck. My shoulder has dislocated at least a dozen times in a 2 year period. After a while, it doesn't hurt but it dislocates so easily. One time, I jumped on my bed landing on my belly and my shoulder dislocated. That's how bad it was. I finally had surgery on it and it was rough. 2 months of keeping your arm in a sling. 3 months after that of rehab yet no sports. After a year and a few months after the surgery, I was playing basketball and my shoulder dislocated once again. My surgeon said before the surgery that there is a slight chance it could dislocate again. Surgery is definitely needed but there are no guarantees.
