Overclocking results on Q6600 THUS FAR!

Ok so i got to overclocking.
im at 8x450 right now. all voltages stock, except ram (which i didnt touch. i suspect the bios took care of that automatically) which is at 2.1v.
been running 4 orthos simoltaneously for about 2 hours now.
intel thermal analysis tool tells me the 4 cpus are 50-55 degrees (it fluctuates between those values).
q6600+p35c-ds3r
and im not done yet!
as soon as i hit the wall, im gonna look into voltage reducing and whatnot. dunno where to begin.
hit 12k 3dmark.

o and did i mention im using a puny arctic freezer 7?

you need some kind of key combination me thinks. Check the manual that came with the bios ? CTRL-F1 might do the trick ...
 
I think that I've read in some reviews that it means nothing more than the DDR voltage is out of specs - perhaps it reads your SPD at 1.8V, and you have to set it to 2.1V.

For the MB, it means "fails". You're OK though.

Check it out on Google.
 
yea i saw that in some weird language forums on google.
when i open easytune5 (gigabytes own thing) in windows, it says its running 2.1v to the ram..so im happy.
but its still on auto in the bios (meaning 1.8v). unless its actually saying the truth on the side (about increasing voltage as overclokcing is done).
well im in windows now, didnt have patience. nothing out of the ordinary...yet
 
yo do you have any recommendations for amemory stress tester?
and also: my spd is 1:1...and my ram speed is at 2x355 = 710..but i wanna achieve the full 800. how do i do this?
(im running 9x 355 right now)

Easy - simply run your CPU at 400 x 8.
As for memory stress testing I recommend Memtest.

im running orthos now on 8x400...seems fine so far.
i used easytune5...i see my pci is at 33 mhz and the voltage to ram is 2.1v (both excellent).
im reallly happy. i dont think anything is wrong.

gonna run memtest soon.
currentlly@8x400, 626/928 8800gts 320mb.
 
Hardly worth it to you for my response. I'd think those OCZs are good on the lifetime warranty to at least 2.1, possibly 2.2. [Geesh. That G0 stepping sure seems to kick up to the challenge easily . . . ]

Run your MEMTEST86 and ORTHOS tests so you're sure the settings are rock-stable.
 
Ummm.... doesn't Intel's TAT report temps 15C higher than normal? I'm running my E6420 at 3.2ghz, same FSB and multi, and with a Big Typhoon (with a Silverstone FM121 on it), I'm getting about 53-55C full load.

Something smells fishy here.
 
you're testing incorrectly! each instance of orthos must use a different core. Every window says "using cpu #0" which means you're not stressing all 4 cores.

To do it right load up Prime 95 from here http://www.mersenne.org/gimps/P95V252.ZIP then when it launches select the small FFT (max CPU stress) and tell it to use 4 instances (stresses 4 cores).

Then record your temps. I bet you'll be above 65c

either you need to drop speed or vastly increase vcore. Probably above 1.4v to hold it. Then you have to battle heat.
 
nah id rather not (at least for now. the fact that i didnt know how to test worries me about how noobular i am)
i reduced it to 3.2ghz (still 800mhz increase over stock) and its at or around 60-65 degrees.
looks stable, will run the way you described it for 5-10 hours see what happens.

blend test for max stability test. This will also test your memory for stability.
 
hey is a temp of 65 ok?
or is that bad.
im getting in the range of 60-65 with the max cpu stress test.
is my cpu gonna melt down?? 🙁
 
there isn't a temp program that i knwo of that is reading the temp correctly.

you need to add anywhere from 10-15C's to whatever your highest temp is... that is close to your real temp...

TAT and Core temp are reading the temperature of the cores under the IHS. Not the diode under the CPU. They're as accurate as you'll ever get.

And 65c is the high limit I'd want to see. If it goes up to 65c and is pegged there it's pretty hot. If it doesn't give an error or crash then it's fine. No real world app will cause that much heat.

so...long story shot..65 degrees is ok for a quad?
just want to confirm that.


im exstatic with 3.2, but if putting it at 2.4 means it lasts more then a month, then so be it.

no it's not...real world = photoshop, games, sound editing, video editing and encoding apps etc.

DC apps do not count as real world in that sense. Plus for most people DC apps aren't ever touched so to use that as a comparison doesn't even make sense.

65c is fine btw...not everyone uses DC apps every day :roll:
 
TAT and coretemp are inaccurate for G0 chips.

i've seen people posting 17C's idle with 25C's room temp... sounds kind of inaccurate to me... especially with air cooling
