Overclocking for lamers?

It seems that over clocking is not worth it. Just buy the next step up if you plan to over clock. By the time you spend money on proper cooling you will have spent the same amount of money. Is it just for the thrill of it?
 
Xbitlabs went up to the X6800 conroe with the E6300 I think. Well $1000 chip vs $+-200 chip + $60 Tuniq Tower... Yea... Let's just buy the next step up...
 
Processors of a brand and make are sold in multiple steps, with different clock frequencies being the only difference between them. Why buy a 2.4Ghz Athlon 64 when you can buy a 1.8GHz for a lot cheaper, and overclock it to 2.4GHz without needing to swap heatsinks?
 
Yea i think people just OC to see what the cpu, and or ram, etc. will hit. And they can have it oc'ed for a awhile to keep up with the new items. But it is mostly for fun and games. I on the other had have a bad cpu to OC i have a 4400+, the highest i can get it like 2.7.
 
Hmm, letsee, I bought a 3700+ and OC'd a little past the FX-57. $200 vs $800 CPU, and I was gonna buy a high performance cooler anyway instead of stock so I saved myself $600. And by the way that was more than just "a step up" - that was several steps 😉

That is why I overclock.
 

OCing is fun. Sometimes.

sort of an electronic version of taking a 67 camaro and giving it a candy apple
paint job and a 400 horse motor.
 
overclocking does not mean you need better cooling, however, good air cooling only cost around $50, not bad compared to paying double or triple for a cpu.
 
wow. Personally I bought an opteron 170 for $365. Bought a thermaltake big typhoon for $50. I Oced my 2.0ghz processor to 2.75ghz... That's PAST FX-60 which cost close to 1,000.

To provide some idea of overclocking abilities with other Core 2 Duo processors, we ran quick tests with E6700 (2.67GHz), and E6600 (2.4GHz). The test E6700 reached a stable 3.4GHz at default voltage and topped out at 3.9GHz with the Tuniq Cooler. The 2.4GHz E6600 turned out to be quite an overclocker in our tests. Even though it was hard-locked at a 9 multiplier it reached an amazing 4GHz in the overclocking tests. That represents a 67% overclock.

Enthusuasts have not seen overclocking like this since Socket 478 days, and in fact Core 2 may be even better. The 2.4GHz E6600, which outperformed the FX-62 in most benchmarks at stock speed costs $316, and overclocked to 4Ghz with excellent air cooling. With that kind of performance, value, and overclocking the E6600 will likely become the preferred chip for serious overclockers - particularly those that are looking for champagne performance on a smaller budget.

I agree with the fact that overclocking is just e-penis BS. I gain nothing but instability and screwed up games from my OCing.
 
I think its well worth it. I spent 400 on my 4400+ I will spend 200 on WC

Then I will over clock it to 2.8 which are FX-62 speeds

400 + 200 = 600

so 600 dollars for a 1000 CPU

I already overclocked it to 2.6 using air cooling but the temps were too high
 
Overclocking is for those people who dont care enough about their computing experience to spend money for it.

Its kind of like cars... some people need a box on wheels to take them from point a to b, some people are not happy with such box. They want to make it run like a ferrari so they soup up their cars. and some people just buy ferraris. Those who drive supped up cars, always seem to have problems to me, while the people who drive ferraris, always have a smiles on their face and wind through their hair.

Its really up to you. Its about what you like more. I would never buy a ferrari because I dont care that much about cars. But I care a lot about my computer, so I would never buy a cheap processor and try to make it as good as an expensive one. I will save my self the hassle and just enjoy the best technology has to offer me.

Well, I hate to brag about my e-unit, but overclocking worked for me. 30% more cpu speed, faster video and memory, totally stable, and I notice the difference in games. I've left it at the same overclock for several months.
 
overclocking IS worth it, not just from a monetary point of view but from a enthusiasts point of view. in most cases the stock cooling is good enough for some decent overclocking.
half the time you can undervolt and overclock, faster speeds, cooler temps.

Ocing can be a lot of things. Some people really get into benchmarks, some people just like to mess with stuff and make it faster, and some people worry about price/performance ratio (especially true if you're working on a budget). To say that overclocking is just about e-penis measurements is ignorant. My rig has been completely stable for me, even with a decent oc. I'll post up some benchmarks that I did a while ago comparing a stock processor to an oced one with various games. There IS a noticeable difference.

On the contrary. It's an extremely satisfying feeling when you build a fast rig or a fast car on a budget. When that little rich boy pulls up in his fancy new Corvette that daddy bought him and you blow his doors off in your budget Camaro (insert any car here) that cost you 1/10 the price and that you built yourself, there is nothing quite as satisfying.

Same thing goes for computers. You have a very nice rig but I'll bet mine cost less than 1/2 as much as yours, yet it will do 90% of what yours will. Disregarding your sweet monitor of course. I'm not saying ocing is for everyone but don't disregard the benefits and fun that it can provide.
