ok i need a push in the general direction here,

i ordered a DFI ultra - D and an opty 165

i've heard that opty 165's are locked at a 9x multiplier.

i have OCZ value vx ram that can push 225 - 250 FSB if i give it the right voltage.

so what type of multiplier and divider for my ram am i looking at here? i'm looking to push 2.6 ghz on my opty.

thx in advanced

ok i've been doing some research , lemme know if this is right

in order to hit 2.6 on my opty i'd need an HTT of 289 x 9 with a memory divider at 333 which would make my ram run at 237 FSB?

(200/166)x9 = 10.84(ceiling)= 11

289x9 = 2.601 / 11 = 237

i have another question, can you manually set a divider that isn't a default one with DFI boards? or do i have to use the 333 divider?

The 333 divider should work fine for your combo. The 140 and 150 dividers seem to be a little klugey with the Opterons from what I've read, so you might be out of luck using 8x325 with either of those dividers.

The DFI has about 10 memory steppings so you shouldn't have a problem finding the optimal settings. It goes 1:1 to 9/10, 5/6, 4/5, 3/4, etc... there's tons of options to play with, so just start by setting your memory really low, finding the max o/c of the CPU, and then bring up your RAM speed to match it by dividers.

on that note, since i'm aiming for a 2.6 ghz overclock, should i just start @ the 289 HTT and try to tweak my voltages from there or is it good to start low and creep up

At least for me anything over 290 fails prime95 on core 0. I think I gave it 1.475 volts. Its a shame my MB doesn't have the 9/10 stepping because my ram can hit 270. It will boot but just not stable enough.

Always start low and creep up. Increase HTT to 10 MHz increments at the MOST!! When it fails within 10 min of Prime95, bump voltage one increment, try again. Stop overclocking when you get to around 1.45 or 1.475 volts. That way you know what your proc will do at which voltage which is useful.

I would not worry about Prime, test your games and aps you use. Prime is going to be som much more intense then anything you prob run so why bother...I have never used it and never plan on using it. If I can run what I want, then I am all good.

I have a 148 @ 3GHZ and run at 1.5v no prob on air. I also have my mem at 2.6v.

I can see why you're afraid to Prime. :D :D

Also with the dual-cores, you don't want to go above 1.5v. You don't even want to go that high unless you have exceptional air cooling or water.
