Why is it called Outback?

None of their food is specifically Australian.

but their menu says "bonzer!" a lot.

Yeah, we don't say bonzer either.

Never understood the attraction to Outback.

Food is marginal at best,

Prices are way too high for what you get.

Atmosphere is nothing great.

IMO, just another run-of-the-mill mid-grade steakhouse.

YACR: yet another chain restaurant.

they're all on about the same level to me (outback, applebeas, fridays, etc).

decent if that's what's available, but not somewhere I'd go for good steak (not that I eat steak anymore )

Bloomin' heart attack is my favorite, but their steaks have been VERY dissapointing the past 2 times I've been there. Now Ruth's Chris Steakhouse on the other hand... (convulses)

I've been to Outback once. My steak was not that impressive and no more cheaper than a nicer place with nicer steaks.

Rib Eye there is good, Aussie Cheese Fries are DELICIOUS. You might be able to make a better Steak at home, but you ain't toping the Aussie Cheese Fries at home so fuck all you Outback haters :D

And the order of Aussie Cheese Fries is large enough to be a meal in inself, and is good as all hell. In fact I will go so far as to say

Aussie Cheese Fries > your home made Steak cooked on either a grill (a no no) or an Oven that can't possibly get hot enough to cook the meat properly.

Once in a while though it's the best choice in a sea of shitty chain restaurant choices (when traveling).

I'd smack someone upside the head if they wanted to go to one around here though. There's more delicious steak in these parts than you can shake a fork at.

BS.

Whole beef tenderloin - 5.99 a pound.

Two fat ass 8 oz filet mignon for 6 bucks = win. Or 4x4oz filets for 6 bucks = 20% owned.

I cut meat for 8 years and have NEVER seen tenderloin anywhere near $5.99/Lb., you may find a meat shop selling "butt tender" which is half the tenderloin for 8-9 if your lucky and then you will lose 20-25% cleaning off the fat cap..

I always find it funny people being suprised and talking shit that a national chain restaurant doesn't have the best food in the world. It's extremely hard to get great quality with the quantity they have to have. It's fine for what it is. I will never suggest anyone to go there and I never go there myself but it's fine for meeting people and having a good time, not to get the best steak in the world. You can stay at home by yourself cooking your "good steak" while I go out with friends, have some drinks, and eat an overpirced mediocre steak and have some fun OUTSIDE which is the point of these places.

It's fine for a chain. That said, a chain will never have anything approaching upper tier quality. Don't go in with unrealistic expectations and you won't be disappointed.

Anyone with any brains in this world knows quality costs.

Quality ingredients are often cheaper than the nasty processed stuff that has been dehyrdated, rehydrated, packaged, shipped, dipped, sealed, frozen, thawed and microwaved.

And quality has to do with a hell of a lot more than just ingredients.

Did I diffuse your attempt at an internet pissing contest, or are you still going to go for it?

The ingredients make the food. Everything else is decor. The reason why Italian food tastes better in Italy is because the ingredients are better. A tomato salad will be tastier with heirloom tomatoes and cold pressed olive oil. Putting flash-ripened beefsteak tomatoes on a plate with corn oil just won't hold up quite as well.

I didn't realize a contest was going on. I was just commenting on the reality of food. It's pretty obvious that simple, quality ingredients are cheaper and healthier to eat than processed food in the long run, if you do cost comparisons and actually crunch the numbers and take a hard look at your eating habits and choices. In addition, they taste much better.

Thought so. K, have fun then.

The best part about this is that me agreeing with you and mimicking your earlier sarcasm as a friendly joke was misinterpreted by you as me not getting your point and you claiming it went over my head when in reality my gag went over *your* head.

I'm not blaming you for anything, I just thought it was funny that you missed that I didn't miss it.

Edit: :Q

to be a real austrailian restaurant, kangaroo would be on the menu; but not for eating...they'd give you a condom and usher you to a private booth. Kangaroo is the new sheep.

I love Outback but I don't go for their steaks, I always get their caesar salad and chicken alfredo.

They are surprisingly good, especially compared to the rest of their food.
That and those loaves of rye bread are good enough for me.

Maybe it's a location thing. I've never specifically looked for tenderloin on sale, but when I can get t-bones and ribeyes for $4/lb, tenderloin for $6/lb doesn't seem too far out.

This is true for any steakhouse. Well, that 20% goes way up once you start talking about real steakhouses.

Outback isn't bad for a chain, but I agree that it's gone downhill over the years.

I have paid $250 for a steak dinner (for two) at some expensive places, and the steaks there definitely are better, but they're not THAT much better. In fact I've been to places where I spent $60 for a steak and left feeling ripped off since Outback tasted better and I paid $25.

Same here.

Nothing like a thread like this to bring out the steak snobs... it is not barf or nasty or completely uneatable, sure it isn't the best steakhouse, but it isn't bad, stop acting so fucking superior.

Even people with no taste in food need a place to celebrate birthdays and anniversary's. Last time I ate there was in college and it was terrible, kind of like Western Sizzler.

I would only eat there again if someone else was paying and it was something like a work lunch (forced to go).

Why go to a place like that when you can spend just a little more for better quality? Same quality as applebees.

Never liked Outback when I was in the state. When I go out dine, I want my steak grilled, not some pussy pan-fried shit.
My friends suckered me into going Outback here in Hong Kong, biggest waste of money.
