But we have none of that here. The only steak I eat is for $8 at the local pub with chips and a salad.

You don't need Outback Steakhouse because you have steakhouses in the Outback.

If they sold kangaroo steaks I would understand, but as far as I can tell they don't.

Once in a while though it's the best choice in a sea of shitty chain restaurant choices (when traveling).

I'd smack someone upside the head if they wanted to go to one around here though. There's more delicious steak in these parts than you can shake a fork at.

BS.

Whole beef tenderloin - 5.99 a pound.

Two fat ass 8 oz filet mignon for 6 bucks = win. Or 4x4oz filets for 6 bucks = 20% owned.

It's their cuts that aren't very good. Absolutely agree it's fine for what it is, as long as one understands that.

Somebody brought up traveling and knowing that they'll get a decent steak at a decent price. That's the entire goal of these restaurants - consistency across all stores, it is priority #1. What that leads to is consistently mediocre.

Nothing wrong with that, but it is what it is. Not to hijack the thread but look at any cruise stop outside of the country - McDonald's is about as crowded as you can get. Hell, look at the line in any major airport hub around the world at the McDonalds. That consistency and branding is why. Maybe that's why I've noticed Outback being so damn mediocre the last 10 years. They used to be pretty good.

People are products of repetition and reinforcement, hell most animals are. I really need to go be director of marketing somewhere.

Agreed. Consistency is the point of all chains really.

I haven't noticed the decline but I am younger so maybe I haven't paid as much attention.

I love their burger, haven't tried anything else. And at the local one, the waitresses are HOT.

High five! And with the savings, you can get a decent bottle of Pinot. Add some massage oil and a wood burning stove, and you have one hell of a night at home.

Outback? Blech.

I also agree.

It's a bit overrated, but I've never been disappointed there.

i think a product of their horrible cuts (maybe the australian part) is that everything is so lean and gamey, so there is no interesting texture at all. They have their fried onion blossom and spinach dip at the beginning, which can never be messed up. As for steak, the prime rib and ribeye as mentioned, both of which are totally adequate. Tell them you want it to have half the seasoning, as many tend to over-season their steak into a salty mess.

when im traveling 80% of the time i take the risk at a "local resaturant" rather than the chains... tried applebees/b-angus/outback/sizzlers/olive garden in a squeeze...ALWAYS regretted it

It's fine for a chain. That said, a chain will never have anything approaching upper tier quality. Don't go in with unrealistic expectations and you won't be disappointed.

Anyone with any brains in this world knows quality costs.

Quality ingredients are often cheaper than the nasty processed stuff that has been dehyrdated, rehydrated, packaged, shipped, dipped, sealed, frozen, thawed and microwaved.

Sure, I'd rather eat at Mannys, Peter Luger, Smith and Wollensky, Morton's, Ruth Chris, but I'm not phat rich, and going to Outback at happy hour, getting 2 for 1 Miller Lights, some pumpernickle with butter, nice salid, and a 6oz Sirloin with loaded baked potato all for under 15 bucks is a sweet thing.

I don't mind their steaks at all, I have tried them all, and I think their least expensive steak the sirloin is also their best steak.

And quality has to do with a hell of a lot more than just ingredients.

Did I diffuse your attempt at an internet pissing contest, or are you still going to go for it?

When did they stop giving you side salad with your steaks?

I used to like their Outback Special.

eh, their steaks are mediocre, but they have some decent burgers. Plus, I love their sweet potato and bread. And their cheese fries that was rated most unhealthy chain restaurant food time last year or something =)

but yeah, definitely don't go there for the steak.

The ingredients make the food. Everything else is decor. The reason why Italian food tastes better in Italy is because the ingredients are better. A tomato salad will be tastier with heirloom tomatoes and cold pressed olive oil. Putting flash-ripened beefsteak tomatoes on a plate with corn oil just won't hold up quite as well.

I didn't realize a contest was going on. I was just commenting on the reality of food. It's pretty obvious that simple, quality ingredients are cheaper and healthier to eat than processed food in the long run, if you do cost comparisons and actually crunch the numbers and take a hard look at your eating habits and choices. In addition, they taste much better.

A real steakhouse is a multiple of Outback and usually more stuffy.

Outback is not trying to set itself as a 4-5 Star place..it's a place to kick back with friends...if one has them or can at least mingle.

My parent's classmates started the chain. They are from Ft. Lauderdale. They have a place down the street from my parents in Wellington.
