Was doing my daily browsing at dpreview.com today and saw this thread. I nearly cried at the pictures. 🙁

What happens in a situation like that anyways? Does the guy get a new car? Reimbursement?

Apparently, the driver of this BMW tried to speed through the intersection just as the light was turning. He clipped another car, lost control, and spun into the metal pole seen in the picture.

Yet another jackass giving us Bimmer drivers a bad name. 😉

Not sure what you're asking... insurance payout depends on what type of coverage he has. He won't just be handed the keys to a new 3-Series convertible, no.

Dumbass must've thought he was driving a M6.

If he'd had a Hummer, this wouldn't have happened. 😀

Yeah...he would've run outta gas before hitting the pole! 😉

Or his front axle would have snapped going over a speed bump or rock, heh.

The BMW kept the driver safe. Kudos to them.

The photographer's EF-S 60mm Macro seemed to do a good job too.

Yeah I thought the pics were very sharp. 🙂 My thoughts also about the safety of the bimmah!

Hopefully he got some brusing though - lessons aren't always easily learned - some learn the hard way. 😛

Yeah that's what I was asking. I didn't know if he would get as much of a claim since he's at fault and I wasn't sure what an insurance company would do in that kind of situation.

Won't he? So long as he has collision coverage, won't he just have to pay the deductable and get the value of the car as a payout? That car looks like a "total loss" so I think the insurance company would opt to pay cash rather than try to fix. His premiums will probably skyrocket.
