Ouch, Obama barely won against a man in prison in WV Dem Primary

Just how unpopular is President Barack Obama in some parts of the country? Enough that a man in prison in Texas is getting 4 out of 10 votes in West Virginia's Democratic presidential primary.
The inmate, Keith Judd, is serving time at the Beaumont Federal Correctional Institution in Texas for making threats at the University of New Mexico in 1999. With 93 percent of precincts reporting, Obama was receiving just under 60 percent of the vote to Judd's 40 percent.

Man, what do you have to do in order to get the dems in a state to hate you enough to vote for a man in prison over you? Wait, I know, you have to act like Obama has so far.

This isn't even Tea Party members or Republicans. This is 40% of registered Democrats voting for some felon down in Texas over Obama...... 40% of Democrats!

Everything is not all hunky-dory in Democratland.

Lefty non tolerance and disparaging of an entire state in 3, 2, 1. Oh, too late. Liberal derailment will be the next tactic.

a) It's West Virginia, a state which has never liked this President.

b) He didn't "barely win" - a 60-40 differential is a huge landslide.

c) This is an embarrassment to any Democrat with a brain in West Virginia.

That is not a huge landslide when you are the incumbent and the President.

This is an embarrassment to any democrat...brain or no brain.

I wonder how many of those Democrats, the 40% that voted against Obama are going to vote for Romney instead when the real election comes around? I wonder how many other Democrats are going to refuse to hold their noses and vote for Obama and vote for Romney in other States?

Dem Primary

Yes and no. WV allows voters to declare a party preference at the polling place. It seems highly likely that at least some of the voters in this primary were not in fact Democrats. There is little remaining motivation for Republicans to bother voting in primaries, and I'm sure at least some of them voted in the Democratic primary instead just to turn this into a "story."

West Virginia.

In 2008 Obama lost to Hillary by 41 points, and 1 out of 5 voters mentioned race as being a factor in their decision. (those mentioning race going overwhelmingly for Hillary)

Darn, Obama's not going to win West Virginia now. He was so close in 2008 too.

This, and with the following qualifier: the "opponent's" status as an inmate, while making a great Fox News headline, isn't relevant. Since neither candidate actively campaigned, it's unlikely that more than a vanishingly small number of these voters knew this opponent was in prison. In other words, this is 4 in 10 dems in WV saying they'd prefer a random unknown dem over Obama. It's quite different from these dems saying they'd rather have an inmate, OR even Mitt Romney. It isn't at all unusual these days for people to be unhappy with the incumbent from their own party but vote for the incumbent anyway over the other party's candidate. How many republicans right now would vote for a random unknown republican over Romney? Probably quite a few.

Hmm...did not know that. When you declare, does that officially change your registered party?

Not just a random unknown Democrat, but a felon in prison in Texas!
