i always try to get the flu shot because i have athsma. i got my shot last week, hopefully its not too late to be effective. ive had the flu before, and gives me serious breathing problems. i really hate needles though...but being very sick and having to breathe very hard on almost every breath for at least a week sucks much more.

does that really happen?? 😱 my doc said that doesnt happen anymore.
i don't wanna be sick 🙁
Not to be critical but he's lying.
Thats how it works.
It gives you the flu so you can be immune to it later.
Nevermind that crap about it being dead.
Influenza is a virus. Viruses (virii?) dont fit the technical definition of life. They cant be dead.
For the same reason be suspicious if you have a virus and you get prescribed anti-biotics.

As for its effectiveness, I seem to avoid the flu entirely if I avoid the shot.
Every year I had the shot I got sick immediately from it and was also sick later on.
When I managed to sneak out of it I was fine the whole winter.

Also, its November. He gave it to you too damn late anyway.
It should be given in late summer or early fall so your body can actually cope with it and be ready for the winter. When its this late I prefer to just take chances and be sick naturally.
Both concepts work on the same premise: You have the disease once so the body can build an immunity and not get it again later.

I think the whole concept of yearly flu shots is a scam. Especially because I know darn well that one little tube cant possibly make you immune to all 2000 strains.

I hope it's not too late to snap up some tin foil futures.

i hate getting a shot too, but it was not nearly as bad as i was thinking it would be.
The problem is, i work myself up too much and get freaked out.
But at least i got some good pills too 😉
(mild setatives 😛 )

Sedatives...for a shot? I really don't understand the aversions to needles that many people have. I hope you never develop diabetes and require insulin.

😕

nope... setative for our cruise... in case of too much motion on the ocean!

well, i will let you guys know if i get sick from it or not.

i got it now because i usually get sick later in the winter... plus, when we go on our cruises, there are tons of people sick, and no matter how much you wash your hands, you get sick. i am hoping this prevents it.

we shall see though! 🙂

The only thing the flu shot prevents is the flu...and that's only if they get the strain right when they develop the vaccine. So there is a chance that even though you got the flu shot you may still get the flu. You will not get the flu from having had a flu shot though.

It will do absolutely nothing to prevent colds or other viruses.

This was the first year I've gotten the vaccine. I got the mist up the nose though, not the shot. I can't stand needles.

my wife needs them. she has a huge fear of needles. though it did not help that at around 9yrs old a needle broke off in her arm. she had to have it surgically removed. so yeah she gets very scared/nervous etc when she gets them.

I just got back from my doctor and got my first flu shot ever. I am a wusse when it comes to things like that but i was sick of getting sick at least twice a year and wanted to do something about it.

Aside from my arm hurting, it was not bad at all, but will it really work?

I come in contact with a lot of people everyday and i am wondering if it will really ward off the flu this winter.

Did you get a flu shot? Do you ever? Does it work?

sick meaning like you got the flu twice a year?

yes... i don't mean full-out coughing, sore throat, but do come down with it pretty bad at least once

Cold or Flu?
It sounds like what you get is a cold, rather than the flu, just going off of what you're describing here. A flu shot won't help prevent that.

I hope you stay healthy for your cruise still, though! 🙂

They are very different when i get each one. I know when i start getting the FLU vs. a regular cold.
I get a good strong flu bug every year. maybe a smaller cold on occasion too.

I got my first shot about 2 months ago. didnt get sick. but havent come into contact with anyone with the flu yet. they gave me a pamphlet and it says they injected me with a dead flu virus, I dont understand why people are saying they get the flu from it, it did say it takes a couple of weeks to start working though. i wouldnt be worried.

I've been getting them for about 15 years, and the only time I've gotten the flu has been once, within days of getting the shot, because I had already been exposed to influenza before the shot took effect, and on the one or two years that I somehow missed getting a shot.

To be honest, I'd take a vaccine for the common cold (if they developed one) over the flu shot (if I had to choose.) Colds lead to sinus infections for me, often, and I feel sick for weeks. The flu is over within days.

This is not true. You can/will still get the Flu. The shot merely minimizes the effects and shortens the duration of the Flu.

I don't get a flu shot, and I probably never will...

I think it makes my immune system stronger if it has to work a little bit... 🙂

How do you know you didn't just get the common cold or something of the like?

Well, lacking the intelligence or balls to make a decent counter-argument, I am sure you will have plenty of free time to do so.

I nearly died with the flu when I was a baby. I have gotten the flu shot every year since then but once and I got the flu that year.

The military gives active duty members FluMist instead of the shot unless you can't have it (shellfish allergy, for instance). It's the one in the nose, and it isn't bad at all though some people really hate it.

After talking to several different people who give shots for a living, it only hurts if they screw up, or you are particularly sensitive. Now, yellow fever -- THAT hurts. 🙂

Yep.

jlbenedict,

The flu shot cannot give you the flu. The virus in the shot is killed and incapable of reproducing.

Heisenberg,

If you were sick less than 24 hours you did not have the flu.

Many people confuse common colds for the flu. Trust me, if you have the flu, you'll know it. It's like a very bad cold, but far worse and it lasts a minimum of two weeks.

shortylickens,

My gawd, not a single thing in your post is factual.

The virus is dead. It cannot replicate.
You cannot get the flu from the shot.
October/November are the prime times to get the shot. It takes only two weeks to reach full immunity. The only time it is too late to get the shot is after you have been exposed.

Please, go read the CDC website on the flu. Your ignorance is simply astounding.

Various folks:

The shot only hurts if you tighten up. Completely relax and it will be painless with little to no after pain.

I'm a body builder and I get intense pain if I tighten up. And the pain lasts for days. If I totally relax, no pain at all.

sandorski,

The flu shot completely immunizes against getting the flu for the vast majority of people.

Thanks Amused... saved me the trouble or a bunch of corrections I was about to make. Only one correction to yours though: the flu shot completely immunizes against particular strains of the flu. But, they don't just pull strains out of a hat - some science does go into it and their predictions are usually pretty decent.
