OT: Stupid Network - Fixed!

I'm so tired of my stupid network at home getting fubared every month or so.

It just stops allowing the other computers to access the internet, I can share files and everything, but can I use the internet? Noooooo :|

I'm trying to set up SETI on my friend's computer while he's home and I can't do it because his computer can't access the network through the router. It could be crunching away right now, but noooooo, the network has to be fubared. In a day or two, it will magically work again

I can't even nef in the basement because there's no internet :disgust:

I don't know what it is, but I never seem to have any problems with my network at home. Maybe I'm just lucky.

Now, floppy drives are another matter entirely. Mine never works right; it's always corrupting stuff that it writes on disks, or it's unable to read a disk which I know is valid. Nobody else seems to have problems with them, but mine always exhibits the aforementioned symptoms, especially when I need it the most. :disgust:

my floppy loves to crap out when I am ready to Ghost a backup. (Always works on the second boot to disk, but just loves to give me crap on the first boot to it)

maybe when geeks die and go to pergatory.... they have to buy their way to heaven by haunting floppies and other obsolete devices that should have died and been long gone from PCs anyway.

I was having this same exact problem on my network... :| Mine would lock up eventually 10 times perday once I got 6 computers linked. I finally nailed it down to my router, Netgear RT314. I replaced it with a cheap DLINK DI704 and my problems have been solved. I can hook 10 computers to it,with 2 uplinked switches and no problems all week long since the swap.

Like yours I could access all computers, but not the internet after so many hours. Might be 2 hours, or 6 hours, or as little as 10 minutes.

I have the DLINK router that you mentioned. I wish mine was as trouble free as yours :|

Now my damn seti queue wont upload, it says wait :|:|:|:|:|:| Why does it do this? Is the server down or something?

The Network is fine, have trouble with BellSouth DNS servers, have to constantly re log back in to keep a connection.

I do notice an odd occurence if anyone has any idea why it's doing this. The machine name of my main rig which is on the DSL and supplies the other machines too (It's doubling as the Router) keeps changing between 2 different names on it's own. When it does this it causes the machines coming in to SETIQ to change as well. Any ideas???

Hi guys,

I haven't had the time nor luxury to hang out here like I did in the past. Just happened to see this post and thought I would share my experiences.

When I first got cable I needed a router so I could have all the computers share the connection, but money was tight and the broadband routers averaged well over 200 dollars. I had an old p100 laying around and a couple of PCI network cards, so I set up a freesco router. It worked amazingly great for that and I never had any router related problems, and it is surprisingly easy to setup. Recently I saw the DLINK router/switch combo on sale at BB and I bought it thinking that it would be easier to configure and forward ports and what not. Well after using it for just 2 weeks I went back to my old freesco box. The freesco box is both faster and more consistent. The Dlink would just sometimes not be able to access the internet and if I was playing a long game of WC3 I would get disconnected from Battlenet. I gave the Dlink to my dad (who just got broadband), and am happily cruising again.


The point I am trying to make, is that most of us DC'ers have the needed freesco equipment just laying around collecting dust. If you do you can try freesco and see if it improves things. Only warning is that it can be a pain to deal with port forwarding for online gaming and what not. Once you figure it out it works great. If you put freesco on a higher end box it can even run SETI too.

Mine always crapped out too. I think in my case it is a WinXP issue. Hate those buggers, that is why I don't use them anymore. I made a bootdisk, and burned that to CD! I also did the same with my ghost boot disk. So I no longer have the need for them. If I do, I have a spare one laying around that I will pop in and under dos will copy that to my hd.

Updated the firmware on the router, that didn't help at all

I dunno what to do, I didn't touch any of the internet settings on any of the computers.

what ISP?


Mcowen, as far as DNS servers go, very few ISP's operate effeciant DNS servers, the best I've found BY FAR is Xmissions DNS servers, I would refer you there, but I don't know how they take to people piggybacking on their network (even tho I do...:Q)

LynX are you using any type of computer side internet sharing or firewall software?

I rarely use floppies myself, but in this case I'm trying to install an OS on an old Compaq that I was given. Unfortunately, it won't boot from a CD, so I must use a boot floppy. Its floppy drive works fine, but the one in my main system is being a PITA; it seems to corrupt files on the disks, or just plain refuses to read disks at all.

Other than that I don't know what you're asking. I don't know a lot about networking.

Unless there is a built in firewall, I am not using one. I had zone alarm set up but it was a lot of hassle and I disabled it. I know, tisk tisk for not having a firewall.

I've read where some people put in a different DNS than their ISP, interesting. The article I read said that they put in the DNS of the local State University and said they shoudln't complain since it is their tax dollars anyway, guess that person doesn't live in Georgia, I don't think that would be a good idea

Yes, and it works most of the time. Took me forever to figure it out, but it can be done. I bought the broadband router because I was hoping to get broadband, but my efforts were useless, my parents wont budge on the subject :|

random though = what IP range is your DHCP set for? are your other machine's(not running through the router) IP addresses possible the same as one assigned by the router? THAT would definately cause problems

None of the other machines have set IP addresses. I even tried unplugging the HUB from the Router and using just my computer and my parents computer on the router and it still didn't work.

I'm really lost as to what to do. I've tried everything I can think of and I can't get it working.

I still can't transmit work units either This sucks :|

If you have it pointed to mine then try putting in my IP of 204.71.108.117 instead of mysterymachine.no-ip.com

Again - I'm grasping at straws here - I'm thinking that it may just be a DNS issue with the setiQ(doesn't explain your other network stuff though )

IP address didn't work either.

Here's what it says when I ping the SETI server:

Issuing Ping Test to Seti Server
Connect failed to 'mysterymachine.no-ip.com'. connection refused

Here is what I have determined:

It's not the router, I just hooked my main rig up to the switch and took the router out of the equation and it still doesn't work.

It's not the switch, I unhooked the switch from the network and tried it on the computer hooked up straight to the router, and it doesn't work.

It's not my dial up connection, because I deleted it and made a new one and it still doesn't work.

So what could it be ?
