SOUL: in religion and philosophy, the immaterial aspect or essence of a human being, that which confers individuality and humanity, often considered to be synonymous with the mind or the self. In theology, the soul is further defined as that part of the individual which partakes of divinity and often considered to survive the death of the body.

ASSASSINS: Arabic, plural HASHHSHADHIN, in Middle Eastern and Asian history, any member of the Nizari Isma'ilites, religio-political Islamic sect dating from the 11th to the 13th centure and known, in it's early years, for murdering its enemies as a religious duty. The Arabic name means "hashish smoker" referring to the Assassins' alleged practice of taking hashish to induce ecstatic vision of paradise before setting out to face martyrdom.

It's left over from the h/p/v/a/c and warez/ascii days of past. Haven't been in the scene (or burned one) in a really long time, but if you don't know where you're coming from... I think I had a Cypress Hill poster in my room when they first came out, in the corner it had a Soul Assassins logo, so I basically stole it. :) There was someone else (I want to say from iCE, but it was so long ago), that used Sole Assassin but he was a chump, mine was better.

Being a skinny guy with a knack for trouble, my friends started calling me "Slim Shady" (i know it's kinda dumb), which turned into "Slim", then "Slim Pickins"
Hence: Mr.Pickins...

Everyone calls me by a nickname (usually just "slim" or "mr.pickins"), because my first name is Austin, which also happens to be the city I live in. I hear my name so many times a day that I tune it out, and don't respond when someone calls me by my given name.

Well, almost 5 years ago (back when I was 15), my best friend and I and another friend were out in the country cruising around in his Mercury Lynx wagon, and our other friend was bitching about how he was driving, so he slammed on the brakes and asked him if he wanted to drive.

I piped up and said I would, so I hopped in the driver's seat and we took off down the road. Well I decided that I wanted to try to do some fishtailing, and I kind of lost control, so rather than go into the ditch, I locked up the brakes and we spun around and did a 180. For some reason, when I signed up for anandtech, I used 01, the year I graduated from High School, rather than the 180 that I use on everything else.

I'm starting to get tired of it though, I started going by deerslayer on some stuff now because I love to hunt :)

Smokeball: I can?t believe this nick. It was a split-second decision I made one fateful day, 01/03/2001 4:25 PM to be exact. :)

For the previous 14+ years, my primary hobby was skeet shooting. After years of practice and finally getting lasik surgery (by the same doctor who did Tiger Woods a year and a half later) I finally rose from the ranks of pretty good to a level where on any given day I could beat anyone in the world. Not bragging ? just a fact. ;)

The best shooters like to shoot with very tight choke restrictions which is a little contrary to what most folks would think. The bigger the pattern the more likely you hit the target, for all you need is a ?visible piece? to score. But skeet shooting is a long tedious game where it has been said, ?Those targets are not hard to hit but they sure are easy to miss.?

A tight pattern when centered on a clay target will turn it into a big puff of black smoke in the sky. If you are a little off center, the target will still break but it won?t ?smoke?. When you see the target get one of the edges knocked off, it is sort of a wake-up call ? telling you that you had better get your mind back in the game before you end up missing.

As I became more proficient I usually ?smoked? most of my targets, if not all. My shooting buddies started calling me ?SMOKE?. Since it was a compliment usually used in a phrase, ?Good shot, you really smoked that one!? I was secretly pleased with the handle though I never let on that I really liked it.

Right at the top of my shooting career, the arthritis and degenerative disk disease I?d been fighting for years got the best of me. My last three tournaments (three day affairs) had me leading ?the shoot? without a missed target. Back spasms forced me to withdraw from each. So with great reluctance, ?I hung up my cleats?.

Long story, but like old-timers do, I like to linger in my past memories.

Anyway, after retiring from the ?skeet circuit? I started looking for something to pass my time. Being an active stock and commodity trader I had always had the very best computers that DELL could build. I decided to learn a little more about these machines I used in my everyday life. I found the AnandTech Forums.

I needed a nickname. So I tried to get ?SMOKE? but someone already had taken it. I started to use ?AAASMOKE? (my email address) combining my skeet shooting class ?AAA? and my nick but decided that may be a little too risky. (Ha, use a goggle search for aaasmoke and see what you get.) I tried various names incorporating ?smoke? but could find nothing that had not already been used, so in haste I chose ?Smokeball?.

Now it appears it may even be on my tombstone. ;) :)

I helped out a friend that ran a radio station and they had a call in show, there was some pretty wild things said and it was getting to have a lot of profanity so I helped him set up a little delay and I was the Bleeper for a while. Tedious thing being a bleeper but everyone started calling me Bleep and it stuck. I had another name here on Anandtech and one time several years ago after a series of forum crashes when I tried to reregister my name was gone and has never been used so I just used Bleep.

I would have guessed that TA was indicative of Team AnandTech, but I'm probably wrong...

Hmmmm, I thought there was some hidden meaning in T&A (not TA).
Mind you I could be wrong :D

Wow, hadn't thought about this in quite a while. However, now that you brought it up I do remember. It must have been 10 years ago now that I hijacked my then wife's handle for my own use (amok seemed to fit my chaotic personality much better than it did her). Something about amok just resonates in my mind and says "me" ;). When I saw her using it, I gave her a kiss, told her how thoughtful she was for finding the perfect handle for me, and cooked her a five star meal. Was terribly deceptive of me, but I couldn't help it. I am amok...

I wanted an original name, that had Z and Y in it, I was 11 when I created narzy, at the time I didn't know about nazi's but I would have picked the name regardless as it has nothing to do with that awful political movement. its cool, its origional, its me. and the bulldog, is now my trademark for everything, I love it, its so well done.

Dang. I knew why your name was Smokeball, and had seen you make a few references to not shooting any more, but I never knew why before. Very sorry to hear, Greg. That really sucks.

I've used Rattledagger since all at MURC-forums had to re-register in 1999.

Uhm, a hint?

Hmm, a couple of fingers into some part of a text that most likely is by someone that once was called old rattle dagger in a TV-series.

when not messing with comps I make and shoot primative archery gear.

Osage is the wood of choice for "self bows" a bow made of a single split of wood ..no glue, no fiberglass. just like they used to make them several thousand years ago.
Osage is native to Oklahoma, Missouri, and many parts of the south.....it is somewhat difficult to come by in Montana however but it can be done. I have used the internet to trade for osage staves from as far away as Virginia. It seem that elk hides , and Rocky Mountain Juniper are hard to come by in Virginia, and many parts of the south.
