Movies like lord of the rings never win best picture. It's always the movies that make us "think", like mystic river or lost in translation. It doesn't matter that movie captured minds of millions. If it doesn't carry a "message" it usually won't win the oscar. This sucks, but it's true.

Gladiator did win over Crotching Tiger, Hidden Dragon though.
And rightfully so. I was bored through most of CTHD and found the story pretty hard to follow. I wasn't awed like a lot of people were.

No acting nods for LotR kind of bugged me though I'd say Ian McKellen absolutely was Gandalf. I can't conceive of a better performance. I don't know if it will take best picture, but I'd be happy with best director.

Lost in Translation is an excellent film though I still have to see Mystic River.

I'd love to see Depp win Best Actor but I'm forced to dwell in reality so...

My thoughts:

I'm thrilled that The Triplets of Belleville was nominated for best Animated Film and Best Song. If you've heard the song, you can't get it out of your head -- it's way too darn catchy! I hope it wins both awards. Finding Nemo was a great movie, but Triplets of Belleville was REALLY unique and special.

Hulk should have been nominated for best editing.

SOMEBODY (Serkis, McKellen, Astin, Wood, heck... even Billy Boyd) from ROTK should have been nominated for actor/supporting actor.

A nomination for Keisha Castle-Hughes in Whale Rider was sorely needed. Thank goodness it came!

No visual effect nominations for either of the Matrix films is a crime. Say what you will about the movies themselves (IMO, Reloaded was pretty good, while Revolutions sucked), the visuals were absolutely incredible in every way. Same goes with Hulk. PotC and Master and Commander had good effects, but nothing earth shattering.

Seabiscuit should win for best cinematography, but that's about it. It was a very bright spot in a movie that was highly overrated, especially when compared to the book it was based on.

I'm very glad the Last Samurai got a nomination for best costumes - they were incredible! The same lady that did the costumes for Samurai did the costumes for LOTR. So, yup, she got a double nomination.

Danny Elfman got nominated! Woohoo! I haven't seen or heard the soundtrack to Big Fish, but who cares? It's Elfman! :)

If LOTR wins, it's only because people in the Academy felt sorry for it losing in the past 2 years and want it to finally win a major category. As enjoyable as LOTR might be, it's just not the Academy kind of movie. Especially when without any character development in a fantasized world. I'm also disappointed w/ Master and Commander and Seabiscuit's best picture nom. Neither are great movies, but Seabiscuit is pushing it; it's borderlining good and great for me. Seems like the competition for best picture this year gone down. A few years ago there were too many great movies that deserved best picture nod. Now we're ending up picking Master and Commander. And where the heck is cinematography nod for Winged Migration?

i think it can win best picture this year because there really hasn't been any stiff competition this year. btw, i think this was THE BEST LOTR. i liked this best, the first second best, and the middle last.

Seriously, where is Jamie Lee Curtis' nomination for Freaky Friday?

Also, these movies are all recent, especially Cold Mountain coming out right around the Oscars. :|

As far as visual effects and PotC, watch the movie again, and watch how beautifully the skeleton crew is done and how seemless the transition from human to skeleton form is. You'll be a little more assured that it deserved a visual effects nomination. Though RotK better win that award. And Ken Watanabe so deserves his supporting actor nomination. And Johnny Depp must win best actor, him as Captain Jack Sparrow has to be the best acting I've ever seen in any movie, it was just amazing. So I'm counting on the Academy to do things right this year. And I wanna see RotK, Peter Jackson, Ken Watanabe, and Johnny Depp all walk away with awards.

Also if you don't think Andy Serkis deserved a supporting actor nomination, you do realize he did the motion capture, voice acting, and most of the facial expression modeling for Gollum, I truly think he deserved a nomination. Geoffrey Rush deserved a nomination too, he did a great job as Barbosa.

Though the Academy has made some very bad choices in the past (ie. Shakespeare in Love, Titanic, The English Patient)

A movie is great in its own right if you enjoyed it. I don't need some panel of Hollywood producers to tell me what's great and what isn't.

You misunderstand. We don't follow these things to find out what's good. We follow them in hopes of seeing the films we like (ROTK, Lost in Translation) get the recognition they deserve.

I thought Ken was awesome too, but Djimon Hounsou gets my vote. He was kickass in In America.

Too bad "In America" sucked. I don't know why the critics love this movie so much. I enjoyed "Lost In Translation" very much but I didn't enjoy "About Schmidt". I was very disappointed after finishing that movie. Oh and the Kathy Bates hot tub scene was SCARY.

It happens every year. They release their movies later, because it means they'll stick in the minds of Academy voters more. Look at Insomnia from a couple years ago. Ebert said it was an oscar worthy film, yet I don't think it was even nominated (it was released in the summer). It's got to be a huge movie to remain in the minds of voters (ie: PotC).

I thought the CGI in 'Pirates' was probably the best I've seen all year (I saw ROTK in 2k4, so it doesn't count ;)). If anything, the skeletons often looked animatronic, not CGI. Plus the final sword fight in and out of the moonlight was AMAZING.
