Just curious to see what people were using prior to Win7 Beta, if they like it, and if they will buy it once it goes RTM! :)

I'm updating this system later in the year to a quad core platform so that will be the perfect time to make the transition to Windows 7. I'm finding all sorts of nice usability touches with Windows 7 that make computing fast and fun.

Haven't had time to check out the beta yet, but I'm currently running Vista 64 bit.

I plan to buy Windows 7, but I'm not sure I'll upgrade at release or wait awhile.

Aero Shake, not even mentioned much in the Microsoft feature lists yet.

Coming from Vista, there are a few things I like and dislike. The speed is great, but the GUI doesn't blow me away. I'll still get it though... to get away from Vista.

The new taskbar is refreshing, but overall, the GUI is OK. The reason is simply because most of it was already done in Vista. They still haven't fixed the "apply view setting to all folders" bit.

This new Libraries crap sickens me. I find no use for it, mostly because I'm already very organized. It seems that with every new edition of windows, microsoft finds ways to keep people unorganized. Even after years with Vista, I still prefer XPs User files. I can deal with Vista's User Folder, but Windows 7's Libraries are just retarded. Now I have to find a way around it... or learn how to use it properly. Right now though, I don't feel like learning. Maybe later.

The control panel is even worse than in Vista. There is too much clutter, but at least in Vista I could find the Mouse icon via the consolidated menu. In Windows 7, I had to go to the Show all Icons and then go through all 60 to find it. It's just too many.

Once again Microsoft fails to be intuitive. There is more to learn with this operating system and it seems more complicated than ever. Am I saying that it sucks? No. Windows 7 is probably the best OS they've released, but they still have a long way to go in order to streamline the OS to make it more intuitive.

PS: Windows 7 is super fast; it restarts in less than 1 minute.

They own regardless, just being able to open an application and tap into an existing library is a very cool idea. I only hope more applications come along that will use this neat feature. :)

Using Vista 64 on my main desktop right now, but I like what I see in the Windows 7 Beta installed on my laptop.

Buying an MS operating system the day its released is still retarded, but I can see myself buying a release copy of Windows 7 after its been on the market for a few months.

W7 rocks, but as stated on other location this should be a SP and not a new OS.

Funny, running a beta, and..well..it runs...computer still didn't explode yet. Issues so far are "minor" and this OS is actually USEABLE already, in all aspects. This is probably closer to RTM than Vista ever was :) (Minor quirks aside)

I love it. Came from XP 32 bit, using Win7 64 bit. The speed is what impresses me, although I really wish this had come out as Vista SP2 instead of a brand new O/S. I guess that's the popular opinion around here too. Also, the GUI doesn't do much for me either, you'd think by now Microsoft would have looked more at stealing ideas from Linux with Beryl instead of Apple's stuff, but it does it's job. I suppose transparent is the new black?

What this OS really means though is that Microsoft is probably going back to releasing a new Operating System every few years. 95, OSR2, 98, SE, ME, 2000, XP...and then long pause. I liked this long pause. It gave the community a chance to really get used to what XP had to offer, to know the inner workings of everything the OS did. It's probably just nostalgia or a sense of familiarity though.

What's this whole Aero Shake thing?

EDIT: Oh nvm. Neat.

So should Xp have been a service pack to 2000 and 98 a service pack to 95? You have no concept of the difference between a R2 release and a service pack, do you?

Me too.
Was using XP SP3 32b and I think W7 may be faster (/gasp)

Sometimes it takes Microsoft a couple tries to get things right (see: Win95->98 and ME+2000->XP) and maybe if they don't eff it up at the last moment, W7 will see a long profitable life like XP.

Another ray of hope; Justin Long may be out of a job if he doesn't have Vista to make fun of. This will only work if having a W7 laptop out in public no longer makes you the awkward fool Vista did. That's one unemployment check I can't wait to be printed.

Just skip a generation between upgrades. Cheaper that way too!

XP32 -> W7-64 -> 2nd generation after W7

ROF:laugh:MAO

And personally, I'm using XP32 on my gaming rig and Vista Ultimate 64 on my Folding rig (multicore cpu optimization makes a big difference). I have downloaded the W7-64 ISO & burned to disk and acquired a key for it but haven't yet installed, I need to back up my current XP install onto a spare drive before I mess with the new OS. Maybe by this weekend I'll have time.

So far I like Vista better, but Win7's ok. If I pick up a free copy, it'll probably go to my daughter. I may or may not buy it. It's too soon to tell.

Coming from XP32..

Loving it so far, everything is crisp and clean.

I do agree about the control panel with so many things in it. I spent an hour clicking in each one and reviewing..

I use Vista 64 at work and while there are not extreme differences, my A64 opty 170 runs quicker and more efficiently (so it seems) than the C2D Vista 64 at work. Without proper testing, one cannot be too sure.

All in all, it is great and will wait for preliminary reviews.

People realize the search option is much more powerful now, right?

Again....the speed is seriously amazing. Is there a big difference between 32 bit and 64 bit in terms of speed? I understand there's a 3 and some gig limitation of addressable RAM in a 32 bit OS but I REMOVED 1 gig of RAM from my XP SP3 32bit machine and installed Win7 64 bit and the latter is still faster. Maybe swapfile management just kicks ass in Win7? I wonder if I added some tweaks in XP that maybe hindered performance...

Was Vista this snappy? I didn't pay much attention to Vista because XP SP3 seemed to run better on my laptop than Vista did, but now that the beta of Win7 is out, I finally see XP as the dinosaur it really is. XP was released in Q3 2001.

Its now what, Spring, 2009? That's like still using Win95 in 2003... Actually come to think of it, I still knew some places that did.

The install was smoooooth!
Did not have the network cable plugged in during, so a few hardware
items were yellowed out. When I added netwotk connection and "windows update",
the drivers were installed and ALL was well. Not bad...!
I may install it on my main pc, I like it so much.

Still testing a ton of apps/programs... I want to see if they will all work under win7.
Me likie

Why bother to look for the mouse properties when you can just type "mouse" into the search box instead =)

After using W7 for a bit, it annoys me that so many people are claiming it to be much better than Vista, and now everybody is ready to jump on board. It proves even further that Vista was an unneccessary scapegoat for many, many people, and W7 isn't too big of a departure from Vista.

With that said, I like W7. Not sure if it'll be worth the upgrade or not at this point. But I'm a tech-head, so we'll see what the price will be when it gets closer to release later this year.
