The thing is, I think AT is smaller than you might think. I saw your post and I'm looking for a job but I'm not at all qualified nor do I live in New York. Of the 122614 members of anandtech, only ~8200 live in new york (assuming a random dist of at members across the US). But Anandtech forum members that are actually active are probably a lot less than 122614. And most of them are probably employed. After all, the unemployment rate for tech employees is only 5.8%. So 0.058*8200 = 476. And how many of those aren't active members? Maybe 80%? That leaves 96 people. And how many of them are qualified? How many of them read this thread?

currently I am temporarily employed, however, I have been un-employed for the middle of this year. I just have a subscription link set up for this thread which will Pm me everytime others post. Some useful information can be gleaned and every once in a while a golden nugget will be provided. Active responses do not neccessarily equate to passive participation. Using your numerical example is valid up to the last couple of items. those are active members vs. participation and also those that read the thread. I am looking to fill 2 positions in the Chicagoland area. I am an agent with a multi-line insurance and financial services company (Auto, Home, Life, Commercial, Financial Services, Health, LTC......)
The first is an in-the-office position with the primary duties of servicing existing home and auto insurance clients along with marketing new ones. This will pay hourly + commission and can be part time or full time or flexible. I think the sweet spot for hours worked vs. income will be about 20 hours a week but there is really no cap on hours or income. I will pay state licensing costs. My office is located in Bloomingdale, Illinois. Benefits are not available (yet).
The second is an internet marketing position. I've been playing around with the idea and I think I'd like to give it a shot. I would like it to be based on opt-in email and/or fax. Beyond the initial planning and training this work can be done from home. It will be completely commission and bonus based. I will front any of the marketing costs as long as it is a solid idea (for example, a website hosting provider along with domain registration). I don't want this to be a bulk fax or email spam scheme so it will take a little creativity on building the target marketing lists. I am looking to serve a local market (within 50 miles of 60108). While I realize that I can't build (or don't want to) an entire client base from the internet and email I do feel that I'm missing this part in my overall marketing plan and that there are alot of people who prefer to communicate or do business electronically.

Over and over again US jobs are exiting overseas. Like the article states, a "conundrum". Low prices that we all want in exchange for lost US jobs. Simply put, driving prices down is driving jobs out of the US. How many things are there "Made in U.S.A." left there?

Thanks for the article ParrotHeadToo. I have not work in my chosen field for two years. My job, TPF programming, was getting shipped to India for 1.5 years before 9/11. My company downsized 1/3 to 1/2 of the employees and kept the contract with India. Right now I know that they have imported several of the Indian contractors to the States while I sit on the sidelines.

Being unemployed is hard anytime but never more so than during the holiday season. While the rest of the world is feeling flush with good cheer from Thanksgiving through New Year's, the unemployed tend toward depression. It is, after all, hard to feel joyful and generous when you're without income and a predictable professional future. Add to that all the social gatherings, which require you to publicly admit your continuing unemployment to friends, loved ones, and complete strangers, and it's easy to succumb to something approaching despair.
Rather than decry your diminished capacity, I strongly suggest that you join the celebration. Most people, even the unemployed, have something to feel fortunate about. Taking time to recognize this will actually endear you to friends, family, and others who you rely upon to sustain you in this time of transition. Moreover, a bit of genuine relaxation and celebration will help you to stay mentally fit in the months to come -- making you a more attractive candidate and potentially shortening your search.
So while I won't claim that being in the midst of the holiday season will suddenly make your job search better, it does present you with some unique opportunities that are worth seizing. Go ahead -- and you'll be prepared to make the most of whatever January has to offer.
