I am working as a Technician for a larger corp but I need to get out and find a new job because they are down sizing, and due to my being one of the newer people, my job is being eliminated. I was wondering if anyone could help me out?

Without information being provided on your skills and geographical location/preferences, it is difficult to assist or provide guidance other than what advice has previously been posted in this thread.

Hello and thanks to everyone for contributing,

I graduated summer of 2004 with a B.S. in electrical engineering (focused on semiconductor device physics/fabrication and some circuit design). I worked temporarily for 6 months as a data entry personnel. I did IT for 3 years during college. I'm from oakland, california but I am willing to relocate.

Is anyone here looking for a new grad EE? Thanks in advance for the help.

Ehhh, why not, might as well throw this out there.

I'm likely going to be moving to South Bend, Indiana in the next 4-7 months, and so am looking for an IT related job down in that area. I graduated in Dec of 2002 with a degree in Computer Science, and have been working at my current job for about 5 years now. Currently, I work for a small company and am essentially their "tech" guy.

My main responsibility, which I've been doing for a little over 3 of the years I've been here, is maintaining and updating our online web application. This uses ASP, VBScript, and SQL Server, all of which I'm very experienced in. This web application complements our in-house VB6 application, which I also have experience programming in. So all in all, I feel pretty comfortable in anything SQL Server 2000, ASP, VB6, etc. I'm also picking up some PHP on my own, and would like to learn some more .NET stuff.

Since its a small shop, I also have the basic "IT" guy skills, too. While I've been here, I've pretty much been in charge of maintaining our servers (Windows 2000, 2003, SQL Server 2000, IIS5), maintaining our database, networking issues, as well as the desktop user support, etc.

Ideally I'd like something where I'm just programming, preferably in the languages I'm familiar with but I'm willing to learn anything. I'm actually getting kind of tired of the "jack of all trades" thing and I'd rather be doing the web application programming than supporting all of the variety of internal network issues that come up anyway. Any advice or anything would be great. Feel free to PM me with any info. Thanks!

I just spoke with my chief of operations about open positions and I may have some promising leads for anybody who is willing to make a few sacrifices:

Upcoming positions:

IT Trainer (1)
Help Desk (7)
Network Installer (1)
Sys Admin (1, maybe 2)
VTC Tech (1 possible)

This is a government contract overseas, but within a few hours flight time of the U.S. All of the jobs except for 3 of the help desk positions require an active SECRET clearance...the other 3 help desk positions require a TS/SCI clearance. You would be on federal tax-free status (up to $80,000 income per year). The tour is for a minimum of one year and it is unaccompanied (no family can come with you but they can visit), you can ship up to 5000 lbs of household goods and a private vehicle at company expense. You would be required to share quarters with one other employee. Housing and basic utilities (electric, water) are provided. Telephone, cable, and internet are available.

The details I put here are limited, but I will make every attempt to respond to private messages - unless of course I get deluged with responses! Please be gentle...

How long does it generally take Lockheed to respond if interested? I applied there around a month ago and haven't heard from them.

I have had response take 3-6 months. And then companies wonder why they have to pay outrageous fees to headhunters to get qualified people. Qualified people will not sit around waiting for the systems to get back to them.

Best bet is to do some legwork and find out who the hiring manager is for the slot.
Contact him directly and explain that you are interested in position xyz and have already processed your information into the Lockheed system.

That system is like many within large companies, works great in theory, however, seems to have a open circuit when it comes time for communication.

BE CAREFUL of teksystems. They're a good company to work with during your job search, but keep in mind that like most recruiters, they are NOT YOUR FRIEND. I went on dozens of interviews thru them and couldnt figure out why the companies seemed to love me, but then gave me this line of BS everytime about not being able to afford me or "ran out of funding for the position." It wasn't until later when someone told me that TekSystems wanted upward of $100/hour for me (planning on paying me less than half of that) and was dropping that ridiculous number on these companies after i interviewed with them, hoping they would bite after seeing my skills. And I'll be the first one to say that if I was a hiring company, there's no way in hell i would pay $100/hour for a programmer with just over 5 years of experience.

These guys are not in the business of helping you-- theyre in it to close the deal and make their commission. Don't fall into the trap of believing that they have your best interests at heart. Generally, double the salary theyre offering and that's probably what theyre charging the client to have you work there. Overall, theyre still are a good resource to use in the search, though. They're basically like professional (paid) networking people. (networking in the job sense, not the IT sense).

Yea I know, I was on a project with teksys when I started my job search. It helped me get my current job but the pay was crappy with them and I knew they where getting paid like 2 - 3 times as much as I was. but it was a pritty good job, and It gave me some experance!

I'm not very familiar with teksystems, but then I'm not a recruiter.

I do happen to be the CPA/CFO of a small recruiting firm headquartered in Austin, TX called Clarity Resource Group (www.clarityresourcegroup.com) and I can tell you that none of our spreads on contract IT professionals is even close to being $50 (or double the salary).

In general, recruiting firm such as ours make their profit on volume, not the spread. So most recruiting firms send a candidate to a client with the intention of getting him/her placed no matter what the spread (but obviously we're going to try for as much profit we can, within reason). But the bottom line is that we want our candidate placed at the a position that makes him/her and client happy (thus they work longer and we earn what ever spread we negotiate for a longer period of time...even if it's only a $5 spread).

Shameless plug to follow :Q:eek:
The networking aspect cannot be underestimated. Our firm has two principle partners who are extremely well-connected in the IT industry (and accounting and finance as well).

Past and current clients include Fortune 50 companies down to small adverstising firms. Altough we're headquartered in Austin, TX, we have clients all over the country.

While I'm not aware of all of our client positions desired, I do know we are looking for a programmer with solid experience for a Fortune 50 company HQ'd in MN (a consumer electronics retail outlet we've all heard of). If anyone is interested, send me your resume (dbaginski@clarityresourcegroup.com) and I'll get it in front of our partners. Also, if there are any other IT or Accounting/Finance professionals looking for work, feel free to drop me your resume. Note: if you're a recent college grad looking for work, the cruel reality is that you're better off going through your college's placement office then using a recruiting firm.

Shamless plug ended :D

Like I said earlier, I'm not on the recruiting side. I've actually been lurking on the AT forums for several months as I'm researching my first build.

Best of luck!

Hello fellow ATOTers,

We're looking for programming interns, jr-mid level software developers (web, rich client, embedded, etc.), or consultants in or near Temecula, CA for either contract or full time work.

We're specifically looking for some of the following skills: ASP & HTML, ASP.NET, SQL, PocketPC development, unmanaged C++ coding (coding for scanners using TWAIN)

Programming skills are a must, but more importantly dependability, follow-through, trustworthiness, and ability to solve problems. Ideal candidate is someone who LOVES working in IT. i.e. A tech-geek who can solve problems on their own and whom requires very little supervision and can work in both a team-based or individual environment. If you don't like programming for hours at a time, learning new things, or sometimes attacking a problem that you have no clue how to solve, please don't apply.

But if you're disciplined, self-motivated, feel comfortable teaching yourself new programming languages with only google and a reference book, and are looking for a challenge, please send a resume to darrenATadrylan.net

Feel free to email me with any questions.

Still looking for a job.

A lot of the jobs I'm finding, I don't have the experience.

Currently I'm A+ Certified, have about six years non-professional of building/troubleshooting/fixing computers for family and friends, providing technical support over the phone to family and friends and about 1 year worth of managerial experience and customer service.

Currently working on obtaining my Associate degree in CS. I still have a few more semesters to go though. Looking for anything in the HI market. Thank you.
