I am 20 and live in the UK. I want to work in the US eventually. I have a broad knowledge of computers and software, ranging from PC repair to Web page design and more, but unfortunately I have no qualifications specific to IT (except a lame ass GCSE course on secretarial crap!). I am going to be getting Visual Studio soon and will (hopefully) pick up C and C++ 'fairly' quickly. What skills are good to learn for what jobs? I would rather not have to go back to college. I prefer to learn on my own and work at the same time.

What jobs are good to get into?

What jobs/companies pay well?

Please understand I am unsure about which side of the industry to go into. Would like something with progression and oppurtunity to have a fair amount of 'lee way' eventually.

First & biggest probelm is that you wil have to learn to swim to get here :p
Second, without experience, you will have to pay for your own way over here.
Third, the best market (DoD) is closed to you unless you can get a security clearance.

Use the Net and industrial oriented magazines to get abreast of trends. There are the on-line job boards, trade publications (mags/newpapers), local newpapers for major cities.

Suggestion:
Spend some time in the UK to get some experience. The market demands/requirement should be similar to that of the US.
Then if you wish to come over, you will have something to sell yourself with.

Another possible way would be to use the Net to check for entry level H1B positions. (there is a post above talking about this) Offer yourself up and be willing to cover your costs. Problem is that without any strong skills or experience, you a fighting an uphill battle.

I have no problem there, because I will be learning as much as possible starting with C and C++. Any skills that you think will be necessary to learn would be greatly appreaciated, as well as programs and languages. I have a good understanding of Windows, and am in the process of moving to Red Hat and Mandrake to learn those to.

I know of a company that is actually hiring. I know of 25+ positions that they have filled in the last two weeks. They are in year 2 of a ten-year contract to set up and service networks for US Naval bases. Positions for this can be found here. Openings in California, Connecticut, Florida (although I believe all the Pensacola positions have been filled that are available for the immediate future), Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, Washington D.C.. I don't know how many of these have been filled so Good luck! Check out the company here.

Thanks allisolm! Govt. pay can't be any crappier than IBM's new contract wage scale or no wages at all!

CS Major soon to be graduating with a BS, high honors expected, 4.0 GPA within my major. Looking for employment in the Gainesville, FL area.
Extensive experience with C/C++ and MFC (I worked for a year last year writing MFC applications), HTML, building and troubleshooting computers, Win9x, 2000 and XP.
Moderate experience with SQL, COBOL, Perl, Linux and network design.

Before I started my job last year writing MFC apps, I did not know MFC. Three weeks with a couple of books and some sample code and I was producing better code than what they already had, and fixing bugs in old code.
The bottom line is that I learn very quickly and take pride in my work.

Currently don't have any certifications because I have been too busy with working and going to school simultaneously that I just don't have time. Once I graduate I will be working towards various certifications.

Greetings everyone.

I was away for 2 weeks in Florida visting my Dad who underwent cancer surgery.

Below is an E-mail I was asked to post job info. Thanks go to Nathan for asking me to post the info even though he is not an active member of the website for whatever reason I am not aware of. There is a saying among Firefighters "Once a Firefighter always a Firefighter". The comraderie of this online Community reminds me of this "Once a an AT Member always a AT Member", whether active or not just like Firemen which I was one when I lived in New York.

Also thanks to all who have continued to post job info.

Prayers to all serving Military both U.S. and friends in their efforts to rid the world of Terroristic A-holes. Kick A$$ !!!

Dave

Beware! This website (or, company) scans your HotJobs and/or Monster.com resumes and will send you an email asking if you want job postings emailed to you. They will email job listings, but to access them you must pay a "Premium/VIP Job Search Agent Service Fee of $49.95 for 60 days.

They do say there are "free listings" that you can access but they have either very little or nothing in common with your resume. For some of us, $50 for 2 months of access to their search results may be too pricey. In any case, they do not tell you about the fees up front! Not a good way to establish a relationship with me.

Here is the unsolicited email I received from them. I should have known something wasn't right when the email came from a yahoo account.

Anyone in the Pittsburgh area looking to hire someone for tech support, or application support, or whatever??? I worked for almost four years doing support / installation thing, but recently graduated and so ended my job at the university. Now I'm lucky if I even get an interview for a part time job.

Just hit the 6-month mark of being unemployed. For those of you out there in this same predicament, keep your chin up - things are starting to slowly turn around. The first 4 months of being unemployed were horribly bad - nobody was doing any hiring at the end of 2002 and the first 2 months of 2003. However, now it appears to be picking up a bit. I've had two interviews over the past two weeks and another one scheduled for next week.

Hopefully you are right. I just got an E-mail out of the Blue for Telecom position similar to what I had at Cingular before they dumped me because of the State case. Will contact the Manufacturer tomorrow, keep you posted.

Edit: Spoke with the Manager this morning. They absolutely had to have 4 years and certifications so that put me out of the running but he wanted my Resume on file. He didn't have one so I sent it along to him. Atleast there is inquiries happening.

Good news in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada! The provincial electric company is looking for a team of 14 people to handle a 9-12 month contract to upgrade all their 6000+ computers to Windows XP!

One fellow I interviewed with a YEAR ago called me up to see if I'd join him if HE wins the contract! :)
ManPower Staffing ALSO called me up to see if I'd join ANOTHER company if THEY win the contract! :D

I should check around to see if anyone else might be bidding on it to get even more "fingers in the pot". I like having more than one entrance to the same job - it's a new experience after 7 months of really low employment! :D

The bidding closed today so I should know very, very soon if one of the two companies won the contract! :D

My name is Jordan Hadas and I am interested in working this summer as an intern, technician, tutor, writer, and server jobs come to mind, but I am very flexible (and labels are over-rated anyway). I am an English major at Tulane University in my second year. I could list here my skills/qualifications/etc, but I would much rather talk/communicate with people on an individual basis. I do have a resume ready to be sent to anyone who asks for it, and I have no problem faxing it or emailing it out. Please PM me or email me at jhadas@tulane.edu. By the way, this summer I will be in New York, on Long Island. I live in Oceanside which is in Nassau County. I would be more than happy to commute to the city, or take a job on the Island, up to an hour car-drive away. Thanks!

The interviews are starting to pick up so maybe I'll land a job in the next month or so. Good luck to everyone looking for jobs.

I'll both agree and disagree with this statement. One individual I know, landed a senior programmer position after being unemployed for only two months and his main role is COBOL programming. However, there is another individual that I know with 20 years of mainframe & COBOL experience and he's have a very rough time and finding work. Just having COBOL experience alone is not enough. Many other companies want you to have CICS, FOCUS, DB2 and many other areas of experience also.

I think the best positions to get educated for are the INFOSEC positions. Get fluent in writing application risk assessments, securing firewalls and other security areas. That is what will pay the bills for the next few years.
