Even as a very white American, I've given more thought to picking up a passport card to have a federal ID that is wallet sized. Besides the modern gestapo issues, it has the bonus of not having all sorts of other personal information encoded into it like a DL does.

My stepmother is a citizen who immigrated here in the 1970s and became a citizen in 1982.
She was stopped by police at the supermarket and then surrounded by ice agents. The refused to acknowledge she was a citizen. Rejected her identification (driver's license and SS card) amd detained her for over 3 hours with relentless questioning. The only reason she was released was actually bizarre given what the stated goal of these nazis are supposed to be and in hindsight these meal team 6 wannabes operate under a culture that should have any self declared "True American" disgusted.

After the incident she spoke to others in the community and found out they've been doing the same to anyone who looks Hispanic.
The supermarket she was at has seen a decrease in traffic as locals dont want to draln with checkpoints and harassment from weirdos, losers and scumbags in face masks.

Local police are being used to stop brown people and the meal team 6 losers from ICe swarm in asking for "papers".

Since most people living there daily live dont carry around birth certificates, passports or real id cards or naturalization papers they ended up being detained and harassed by the lowest of shithead wannabes whose directive is to make life miserable for spanish speakers.

With the upcoming budget deadline, I hope Democrats in the Senate are taking notes (they've certainly taken notes on nominations, with those now moving at a snail's pace and practically no voice votes to speed stuff along). Don't accept the word or SS card or drivers license or credit cards or whatever other documents she had, but accept the word of a person they don't know, have on HER phone, certainly provides no documentation, but just says "yeah, she's good."

At least now we know. If you feel you might be detained, program a son, brother, next door neighbor, coworker into your phone with the label Boss and instructions to them to say "yup, he's a citizen, you betcha" if ICE calls. You'll be gold.
