The American people can no longer afford it. We must rely on others to pay for their own self defence.
America is a very wealthy country (especially from median household income and up; and yes, income inequality is an issue, but many are still doing quite well). If we didn't have Bush and Trump tax cuts, we'd be running a surplus, even with current spending. We can definitely afford to pay for the things we want and more.

American conservatives just want to have their cake and eat it too.

how much is the cost of our international contributions (NATO, UN, etc) relative our normal defense spending?

And just as a reminder, during the "great" period of America, the top marginal tax rate was 91% until 1963, and was still 70% until the 80s.

Not saying there isn't waste in defense, there is. But the difference in $$$ between our spending and that of the Chinese can be placed in several different buckets. First, we train WAY more than any other military in the world. Second, we maintain our equipment better than anyone else. Third, we're doing more R&D than anyone else. All those things are ridiculously expensive.

Wouldn’t the main difference be our capitalist system? Or is China’s defense industry also for profit?

Good thing the American oligarchs can afford it. Let them pay.

If you think endless war is bad, wait until you have a short war that you lose.

I think it no longer serves our interests to be worlds policeman. Let countries settle their own differences. It is less expensive....for us.

China is not used to squandering tax payer money. We could learn from them.

You mean like Trump's defense of Taiwan?

I believe Taiwan is a province of China and we should not interfere.

Man if we only had actual journalists being just decent journalists more than 1% of the time these days. This shit is hilarious.

Was half-expecting Noem to respond with "I rest my case". I mean, they are the government and they know they can't be trusted, so...

You're gonna have to come to terms with do you want to be pacifist vs do you want stock market growth because Taiwan is hugely important if not absolutely vital to American Tech companies.

I agree that the Overton window, narrative, whatever you want to call it....on immigration... has definitely shifted right. Agree or disagree, that's where we seem to be. And if there are legit elections in the future, no Dem will win by softening their stance again on immigration. No, it doesn't need to be Gitmo-or-bust, but the neoliberal stance on immigration will not win over the electorate anymore.

On a practical level, I see very little evidence that tacking right on immigration helps non-far-right parties. All it does is legitimize the existing far-right. The more the Tories embraced 'tough on immigrants' stance the more support Reform gained. Same has happened across much of Europe.

The US seems particularly weird given that it has so little immigration, the 'concern' about it seems out of all proportion to the actual level. Here, apparently, pretty much _all_ the projected population growth is expected to be from inward migration. I don't think that's the case for the US.

What perhaps could help is doing more to manage the impact of migration and even out the costs and benefits it brings. At the moment it seems a bit chaotic and the costs fall on different groups of people to those who get the benefits.

If you want to live in a country with minimal economic and military power there are many to choose from and nobody is stopping you.
You mean Canada? I am sure Red Squirrel would show me all kinds of places, none of which I could afford. And they dont squander money on excessive military budgets like we do. 🙂

Taiwan is a province of China and even Taiwan agrees.
I think murrica should stop meddling of other peoples affair for profit and imperialism.

This suggests they are considering defaulting on some US debt. If true something along the lines of "The Musk Depression" is gonna end up in the history books.
