Asus A8N-SLI Premium
AMD Opteron 146 Venus
Antec Performance TX1050B
Antec Smart Power 500W
Western Digital 160GB
eVGA 7800GT CO
Mushkin eXtreme Performance 1GB
Lite-On DVD Burner
NEC Floppy
Windows XP Professional

How's it look? I will be adding another stick of RAM later. I plan to overclock this puppy, and I was wondering if the DFI Lanparty Ultra-D would be a better choice than the Asus A8N-SLI Premium. However, I am a big Asus fan and the Asus A8N-SLI Premium is a nice board. Anyway, any suggestions before I purchase?

Edit:
DFI Lanparty Ultra-D
AMD Opteron 148 Venus
Mushkin eXtreme Performance 1x1GB
eVGA 7800GT CO
Western Digital 160GB
Antec Performance TX1050B
Antec Smart Power 500W
Lite-On DVD Burner
NEC Floppy
Windows XP Professional

The specs I edited in are what I am now deciding on.

I would get a cheaper motherboard considering SLI is a waste of money anyway, get a Cooler Master Centurion 5, Fortron AX500-A, Hitachi 7K, 1GB stick of Crucial value, and Windows XP Home.

This and with the left over money spend it on a Opteron 148 Venus Core.

I'm getting Pro from work for $70. I'm getting the case, PSU, and HDD from a friend for $120. What advantages does the Crucial Value RAM have over the Mushkin eXtreme Performance?

Scrap the SLI mobo, get a bigger hard drive, stick the the 146, since it'll overclock nicely.
Possibly switch to the DFI (since you're almost certainly overclocking), and maybe see if you can stretch to 2x1GB RAM.

(ignore the HDD comment then)

Haha. Please read before you post. I am getting another gig of RAM later. I do not need a bigger HDD. And I was wondering how much more overclocking performance I would get out of the DFI rather than the Asus A8N-SLI Premium.

I assumed 1GB meant 2x512MB to give you dual channel now, since that's what most people do. I also posted about bigger HDD as you made your post about getting the HDD case and PSU together.
If you're getting 1x1GB stick for now, then that's fine, but 2x512MB now and then another 2x512MB later won't be as good as 2x1GB.

KoolDrew: I don't want something cheaper. I want nice overclocking RAM. Plus, it's a 1GB DDR500 stick for $120.

Lonyo: Yeah, I know that 2x1GB is better than 4x512MB.

Anyone, how much more overclocking performance I would get out of the DFI rather than the Asus A8N-SLI Premium.

So you'd reccomend it over the Asus A8N-SLI Premium over the DFI Lanparty Ultra-D if I'm overclocking?

I'm not sure if you can qauntify this as every CPU is different. Since you are getting an opteron and they are overclocking better than most regular A64's I would get the DFI as it has proven to be an awesome overclocking board. Will it be better than the Asus... no idea, the only sure way to tell is to get both and go as high as you can with that CPU. Just from a money standpoint I would get the DFI but if you are a silent freak than the premium's heatpipes are for you.

<-- has the DFI ultra-D

i know you said you are getting the ram from a friend, but if you are paying a lot for it you should just buy 2gb online and get value ram. value ram in an amd64 = performance of stupidly expensive "faster" ram.

No, I'm not getting it the RAM from a friend; only the case, PSU, and HDD. Here's the RAM I'm getting: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820146396
It is DDR500 and from personal experience I know Mushkin is good stuff.

I've edited what I'm buying and decided not to buy it until tonight. I'm now going for more of an overclocking system:
DFI Lanparty Ultra-D
AMD Opteron 148 Venus
Mushkin eXtreme Performance 1x1GB
eVGA 7800GT CO
Western Digital 160GB
Antec Performance TX1050B
Antec Smart Power 500W
Lite-On DVD Burner
NEC Floppy
Windows XP Professional

Look good?

a Benq DW1640 will be much better than a lite-on burner.
Seasonic PSUs are much more energy efficent (ie. less heat) than the Antec. Even with a good deal on the PSU, I would consider the seasonic. Less money (in the long term) and better overclocking due to lower case heat.

Also, don't let people push you into the DFI if you don't like it. The Asus -32SLI is an excellent overclocker... read the review on it at anandtech.

dude If you like Asus go for the Asus A8n32SLI deluxe motherboard, it's overclocks just as good as DFI boards if not better because of the 8 phase power. If you can find it of course...

Opteron dual core 170
Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe
2x1gb Corsair XMS 3500LL PRO
BFG 7800gt OC
Zalman 9500
Lian Li PC-61
WD 74gb Raptor

Hmm. I would love to, but if I get that I would have to get the Opteron 146 instead of 148 and I would really like the 148 for overclocking.

The Opteron 148 has better stepping so it will overclock alot better.

Keep in mind this a spoiled thirteen year old boy...

Opteron 146s come in all the steppings 148s come in. The only saving grace you have with this statement is the first steppings were the best and since the 148 costs more, less people have bought them, so a 148 is more likely to be a better stepping, but that's not a guaranteed fact.

And single core socket 939 Opterons ONLY come with the Venus core so it's redundant to state 'venus' everytime.
