That is correct -- But only if your graphics card is fast enough to handle the game in the first place. X800GTO isnt. That's my whole point.
The problem is with most current games, graphics card is far more bottlenecked than the cpu. In fact it is so bottlenecked, I will go as far as to say CPU speed for current first person shooters does not matter as long as you are not chugging on a P4 1.6ghz.
FEAR - A64 2.8ghz vs. 1.4ghz - 15% difference (not noticeable)
Battlefield 2 - P4 3.8ghz vs. 2.8ghz - 1 frame difference (not noticeable)
Quake 4 - A64 2.8ghz vs. A64 1.8ghz - less than 1 frame difference (not noticeable)
I can't think of 1 game where even having dual core will all of a sudden give respectable framerates, but prior to having dual core, the game is unplayble (not while multitasking). Now you might say...whoa...that's the whole point of dual core - it provides advantages of multitasking and playing a game. Sure, but why even bother until you have maximized your graphics card? It would only make sense if you have a very good card, or a game takes advantage of dual core - which at this point doesnt exist to substantially take any advantage.
The point is A64 3000+ with 7800GTX will be much faster than A64 4800+ X2 and X800GTO at any speed even unlocked. The original poster decided to spend $300 on a processor and $245 on 2 gigs of ram and $179 on the graphics card = $724
What about?
A64 3200+ Retail Box - $152
EVGA 7800GTX - $460
Rosewill 1GB (2 x 512MB) $78 x 2 = $156
= $768 total. Ok $44 difference, but the performance difference will be massive. Plus A64 3200+ will easily overclock to 2.5-2.6ghz.
Again, I do not understand the importance of getting Gskill extreme memory? Memory speed hardly affects A64 - latency is often more important Hardly worth the extra $ in my opinion.
