OK, I have my specs posted below, but I'm thinking it may be too much money for my dad to spend on me for Christmas. So, should I toss the X2 and get a 3700+ or toss the 2GB and get 1 stick? Or what do you think I should do with the specs listed. I need to lower about 1 to 2 hundred but I need to stay with the LCD because my dad says that is the only one he will buy cause he likes it so much.

Monitor:
Acer A1751B @ TD $229.99

CPU:
AMD Opteron 165

HDD:
Hitachi Deskstar T7K250 SATA2 @ Newegg $102.50

Video Card:
eVGA GeForce 7800GT

Memory:
G. SKILL Extreme Series 1GB

Total comes to $1121.11 w/ shipping

Tha's a little mroe than I wanted to pay but for a 7800GT I think it's worth it.

well, to actually answeryour question, i would DEFENITLY get the dual core now....its so much easier to upgrade to an extra gig later, then upgrade the processors..... also, you are not really guna see a noticable hit not having ram run in dual channel...

...also, id consider lookin into dell, you cna get a 19 inch LCD for about 50$ more than what you have...its good quality, not top of the line for gaming, but its good. im not sure how it comparea to that choice that you have there.

I don't think anything you listed would be my first choice:

LCD: I would get a 19inch like chibBOY said.
Mobo: ??
Memory: Absolutely NOT. Get value RAM for about $75 for a gig.
Processor: Fine, but check the HOT DEALS for the Dual Core Opteron, running for $299. 2x the Cache, better quality, and almost guaranteed to overclock better.
HD: fine
Win XP:?? You are sure you cannot find this anywhere else cheaper... or should I say MUCH cheaper?
GPU: Good choice

You do realize that your getting a 262,000 color monitor, right? Oh and the Dual core VS ram arguement, neither will benefit you significantly so you could technically just not get either and opt for a better LCD. And what are you talking about your dad liking the "LCD so much"? There are tons of LCD monitors that are better that look the same, I think hes just being stupid... Explain to him the problem with the monitor and why you should opt for a better monitor. I personally believe you should get by with a cheap athlon 64 and upgrade to an X2 when they get a bit faster...

You mean cheaper right? 2.4GHz per core at the top models (Opteron 180 / X2 4800) is nothing to sneeze at. At all.

? I'm not sure if this will answer your question but I thought the OP should just get like a 3000+, overclock it and then later, get a DUAL CORE and his 2GB of ram tho he will likely have to bump this thread again and ask the question BECAUSE the following could happen in the future first; Either Dual core will be utilized greatly in games or 2GB of ram will be required, but ATM neither is really needed except 2GB of ram for Battle Field 2 under specific settings like highest for example. I run battle field 2 on relatively high settings with 1GB of ram and I've got no problems.

memory doesn't drop as fast as processor price... because they dont introduce new memory type every 2 month...

No, you need a socket 939 processor and thats socket 940. Opteron is not a gaming processor/platform. Get a better LCD monitor dude, you can get a used LCD monitor thats better than that one, although the timings won't be as good, it will at least display 16.7 million colors...

Opteron 165 is 939, not 940

I will look for a better LCD

What's this machine for? If you are aiming for a gaming rig, dual core is useless, and 2 gig of ram is useless with that videocard. Plus 17 inch monitor is not optimal for gaming either.

I'd look into:

$100 mobo like DFI Infiniti or something along those lines, no SLI
A64 3200+ or 3500+ and overclock that
19 inch monitor
2 gig of value ram (but 1 gig is sufficient for now)
7800GT and overclock that
I am sure you can get a hard drive for cheaper with a mail in rebate too.

If you are not looking for gaming, then your setup is pretty good. But i'd buy a $50 videocard then.

RussianSensation, dual core isn't useless for gaming? It's been proven that running the background processors off the one core and a primary application (game for instance) off another certainly increases performence. In about every benchmark I've seen the dual core is dominating the single core.

I know nothing about the monitor you chose (I'm more of a 2005FPW man but that's obviously out of your price range :p), but everything else looks good to me. :)

Show me the benchmark? (Plz don't show Quake4 benchmark since it's SMP).
Also, could someone tell me what's the differences between a s939 Opteron and s939 A64?

Opteron overclocks a ton better, the one I am getting is dual core with 2x 1MB Cache @ 1.8GHz and I will overclock it to 2.2GHz on stock cooling.
