Say bye bye to the stocks at your favorite online vendors. As far as I understand, once supply dries up, no more will be replacing them.

It was a fun run taking 300 dollar processors to 2.8 and beyond.

source? From what i heard, all of the Opteron 939s will not be sold in retails in a month or two, only in select oems

as of right now, amd has discontinued the 165, while the 170/175 are not discontinued.

I can not speak for the future, only about right now.

This rumor goes back to November 2005 when it first appeared. Supposedly it was to happen in December but never happened. But AMD did change their price structures for the Optys and X2s to make the Optys a bit more expensive than the X2s. Was that all AMD planned to do or do they, like the rumors say, plan to actually discontinue a chip or chips? I have yet to see an actual AMD statement on the matter.

It's sad to hear because I just bought Opty 165. I hope it will hit 3GHz. That's my purpose. 🙂
Anyway, do I need DRR1? I already have G.Skill 2G (PC3200).

Asrock 939Dual-SATA2 | G.Skill F1-3200PHU2-2GBNS (2.5-3-3-6) | Opteron 165 (OEM) | eVGA 7800GT (256-P2-N515-AX)

Hope you get a lucky chip or have a chip freezer on hand.

back in november, it was RUMORED to be discontinued, whatever that means. My source never said it was discontinued back in november.

Now, it has been discontinued. Not a rumor.

anyway, take it with a grain of salt. These internet do-gooders who are out to prove the world wrong one internet post at a time wont hush up until it is out of stock everywhere and AMD releases a press release saying 165 = gone.

AMD has this little thing where they say they will support a specific platform for X years.
So far as I know, 939 Opterons haven't been out all that long.
(Yes, they work in normal 939 boards, but that'd be a seperate issue).

If this came from Dave or Tank Guys, I'd believe it.

But at this point in time.. SOURCE

Since every 165 could be a 170, then it sorta makes sense that they drop the 165.

They'd only do it when the 185 is released--if they'd do it at all--and if I remember, the 185 isn't due for several more months (though the 285 is coming out soon!)

885 = february introduction
285 = march availability
185 = april availability

there has been absolutely no mention of EOL on the 165 from AMD or otherwise. Normally, AMD will EOL a part to distros first after a lengthy period of allocation before dropping it. As the case stands, there is absolutely no lack of 165s in any disty and no official notice whatsoever.

I would believe it. It's already been stated that the 165 is still, even after the price increase, taking away from the X2 market.
Wise move to either shift the focus either back on the X2s, or get more money from the 170 which is more or less just a more expensive 165 after a solid OC
