yeah, what do you guys think are the chances they'll stay at this price (or lower) until I have some spending money?

i always figure prices can only go down on tech. but you never know..

AMD's "official" price in units of 1000 is now $278 after the recent price drop, I believe. I wouldn't expect prices to go up much unless a shortage in supply arises (that or retailers just figure they can overcharge for them just because they're popular)

I see that Monarch has DFI Infinity motherboards. For only $20 than the ASRock, anybody that wants a great overclocking board that is budget should keep the Infinity on their short list.

From my reading the skt 939 opterons are pretty much no different than the standard A64 from a design standpoint. They do have the 1mb of l2 cache (like the SD and Toledo cores) and are supposedly held to higher testing standards before being ok'ed as they are server chips and not consumer chips. In reality the performance difference is pretty small with the opteron's probably edging out the comparable Venice due to the cache.

However, preliminary reports show some HUGE overclock potential with the opteron chips, this has something to do with the more rigid testing and higher standards. There are people getting 2.8 - 3ghz on STOCK cooling, which is crazy. We shall see when I get mine...

Aren't the Opterons also multiplier-unlocked like the FX series? If they are, this could also be a factor that helps achieve the crazy OCs.

I haven't heard anything that indicates they're unlocked. I would be pretty surprised if they were.

Well, I think when it comes to changing prices its mostly about supply and demand. As long as AMD keeps producing the chips and the demand doesn't really increase, the prices will continue dropping.

not exactly true in this case...
the opterons are HUGELY in demand... AMD actually dropped the opteron prices when everywhere has a shortage of stock....

I wasn't sure. Since the original FX chips were basically rebadged, unlocked s940 Opterons I wasn't sure if the Opterons had mulitplier locks on them. Guess they do.

Can the DFI Infinity board take AGP slot video cards?

165 on the way next day

You'll be glad you jumped on this when you did. Now backordered at Monarch. I knew I shouldn't have waited to order 🙁

Oh well, at least it's still in-stock for $305 at mwave.com.

Woot! Props to Monarch for not having real time inventory and props to me for ordering a combo which probably delayed my oder a day.

Just got this.

"Thank you for your recent order with Monarch Computer! You placed an order for an Opteron 165 processor. We received an overwhelming response to the processor, which quickly depleted our existing inventory. Unfortunately, we have just been informed by AMD directly that there was a manufacturing issue that occurred on this particular processor. AMD does not expect to have stock on this processor until the end of this month, and that may change depending on the manufacturing process. We do apologize immensely for this, and would like to offer you an AMD gift bag of items to go along with your processor once they are available for shipping again. If you have any questions, please do no hesitate to reply back to this email. Be sure to include your order number in any correspondence back. Please check our website for the most up to date ETA on the processor, and if there are any developments that will cause any more delays we will update you."

Spectacular! So much for getting an early stepping. But, hey, I can wait a month or two and get an black XXL AMD t-shirt and case badge.

And now this:

"Update!

Shortly after we sent our last email to you, AMD contacted us to let us know that they were able to get a partial shipment of the OEM Opteron 165 processors out to us. (Enough to cover our existing orders) We are expecting these to arrive shortly, so we WILL be able to ship these chips out to you much sooner than expected. I do apologize for the confusion, but I wanted to inform you as quickly as possible of the recent development.

Thank you,

Monarch Computer Systems, Inc."

I had just sent an email to cancel my order.

Same thing happened to me Hero. Except I didn't get that second email saying that they had one to cover mine! Do you know anyone that has them?

My Opteron 170 is doing 2.7 right now 1.48 volts havent tried lower volts or higher speed...prime stable. 0530tpmw. Be sure and post your stepping and where you got em!

I just lost out on orders to both Mwave and Monarch. One cancelled outright the other says hopefully by the end of the month. Anyone know any other sources for 165s? The 170 is just too much for too little, relatively speaking.

The real questions is regarding AMDs new pricing. Why are there so few retailers updating their prices? Do they have tons of stock purchased at the higher price and simply refuse to lower the price untill gone, or is the market generally gouging. Newegg in particular has pretty High turnover, so I can't figure why they are still selling the 165 for almost $500!!!

Oh, well, avian flew here, aids epidemic there, a war going nowhere, and strugles all around. This isn't exactly important in the grand scheme of things, but damit I have two preciouse weeks off before my new job starts and I want to blow it playing with my darn toys!

Whhhhaaaa!

end tantrum.
