Man, that's so tempting...but I've still got an AGP 6800GT and the ASRock board isn't a great overclocker (without voltmods)...

Will most S939 mainboards on the market now recognize these new dual-core Opterons? Any known cases where a board has failed to POST because it didn't recognize the chip?

If your board has the bios to recognize an X2, then the S939 Opterons WILL work. The only issue is not a correct CPUID name.

LOL, Mr. Kubicki's comment on how good the GTO2 was, I bought that, now this. I have to resist coming to the hot deal forum.

How can I configure this with the ASROCK 939Dual-SATA2 mobo? Package-wise? It seems there are only pre-chosen mobos to pick from.

Wow good deal... but i'm gonna resist... really.. i swear..

Interesting that the OEM opteron 165 there is priced at $455

The choice of heatsinks sucks, and it doesn't let me set it to none even with the retail CPU.

So is this worth placing an order for now and then trying to get them to argue with them about the coupon when they're open?

Are 939 Opterons going to come down to this price-range permanently?

You guys should also look at the 170. Its only $85 more and should have better overclocking potential!

AMD is really rattling some freakin' cages (at least mine) the last couple of weeks. :p First, the great reports on the Opteron 939 single cores, then the price drop, then the Opteron dual core availabilty and the price drop. I wanted a dual core for less than $299 by Christmas. Looks like I got my wish....

I'm not sure why it's oc potential would be that much more. Look at the venice core cpu's, a 3000+ and a 3200+ usually have around the same avg overclock basing on what I have seen here in the threads and friends that have overclocked them. Since these are the same core and only a slight change in stock speed I bet they oc the same.

Besides, there was a guy on another sites forums (h something... look for the link in the OTHER opteron 165 deal thread) who got his opteron 165 to ~3.4ghz... totally crazy.

From my reading the skt 939 opterons are pretty much no different than the standard A64 from a design standpoint. They do have the 1mb of l2 cache (like the SD and Toledo cores) and are supposedly held to higher testing standards before being ok'ed as they are server chips and not consumer chips. In reality the performance difference is pretty small with the opteron's probably edging out the comparable Venice due to the cache.

However, preliminary reports show some HUGE overclock potential with the opteron chips, this has something to do with the more rigid testing and higher standards. There are people getting 2.8 - 3ghz on STOCK cooling, which is crazy. We shall see when I get mine...

WoW, nice deal, I dont know if my power supply can handle this beast and my Asus A8N-SLI deluxe is giving a lot of problems right now or else I would jump on this deal. If I jump on this deal, I have to sport this beast with a new board, damn, Asus is not the same built like the old day Asus interm of quality control. Tough tough decision!!
